Now the Federal Law does offer protection for credit card users under two circumstances. The first protection being that if there are any errors that may occur on your bill, you would not have to pay them. The second one being in the use of your card being taken and unauthorized charges occurring, the you would pay a partial amount for the card, like $50 but not the entire amount that could have been charged up, as long as you did not authorized the charges.
With this in mind, you are now aware that the charges that are not authorized by you, will simply cost you $50 per card. There is good fraud protection insurance you can purchase. Though, this really covers the cardholders business, not necessarily you.

There are times that the store themselves do not follow policy and that should be reported. However for the most part there will be some limitations set up for your protection.
Here are those protections.
Do they ask for your ID?
If it does not ask for ID, do you need to sign your specific signature, and a signature match must occur?
Is there any other security question that occurs when you run a charge? This could be like your zip code, or private code?
Are their limits to the charges you make unless an authorization occurs?
There are many things along these lines you can look for. Before you obtain a certain credit card, you can always call them and ask their customer service representatives what protections their companies use.

1. Do not leave your cards lying around.
2. Hold your hand over the pads, when you enter private information in.
3. If your card is lost or stolen, immediately report it to the card company.
