Go to school in your state

One of the ways you can save money on your education is to go to school in the state that you live in. Most private colleges, junior colleges, and state schools charge higher tuition rates for out of state students then they do for those that are residents of the state the school is located in.

If you want to get a higher education, it is going to cost you money. The amount will obviously vary depending on where you choose to attend school, and what degree of education you are getting. However, even amongst the various levels, there is differences in tuition prices that can make a big difference in how affordable a school is. A person who chooses to attend junior college, for example, will likely save money as compared to the tuition of a four year college. However, if you attend a junior college and do not live in the state, the cost of tuition often rivals that of a four year college, but you still only get the associates degree.

Let's look at some of the ways you can save by going to school in your state:

  1. Cost of tuition. This is one of the biggest savings. On average the cost to go to school out of state for tuition alone is 1/3 more. This is a significant difference in price, and by eliminating that, you can save. Many times you can find colleges that are just as good of an education, with the same offered degrees, etc. and spend far less getting that education simply by staying in your state borders. When considering what school to attend, pay attention to the difference in cost just for going to an out of state school, and determine if the education you will get there will be superior enough to justify spending more.
  2. Transportation costs.
Most people in school choose to go home for the holidays, weekends, and other events at least on occasion. A flight or car drive to a different state is going to cost far more than one that is closer. You spend less on fuel, on wear and tear on your car, etc. Going to school in your same state can save you hundreds of dollars a year on the to and from transportation alone, and additional expenses.
  3. Housing
If you go to school in the same state you live in, you can often live at home, or at least do your laundry at home on the weekends which saves you money on rent, utilities, etc. The cost of going to college and getting an education is not just that of paying for books and tuition, and often going closer to home means not spending as much to have fun, have food, and have a way around.
