We live in a crazy time and in a crazy world. There are things happening everyday that we cannot predict or attempt to understand. Our economy is a very complicated thing. You never know when the stock market might rise or fall. How can you prepare for your financial future when nothing seems safe? Most of us will encounter some sort of major financial setback in the future. It could be coming sooner than you think. If you think that you will go through life without any kind of serious emergency think again. You will inevitably experience some sort of serious financial difficulty. If you are not prepared for this problem you might be ruined by it. So how can you avoid and overcome personal financial setbacks? This is a fairly difficult question to answer because the answer depends allot on your situation and on what kind of a setback we are talking about. A minor setback can usually be dealt with through help from friends or family.

However, major setback is not something your relatives are probably able to help with. Assuming that we are talking about a fairly major problem, start by planning for it now. You can avoid major financial setbacks by identifying places where you are vulnerable. Do you, for example, have sufficient insurance for yourself or family members. Consider that a majore medical problem can result in millions of dollars worth of bills. You need some sort of good insurance or you will never recover from such a crisis. Another thing to think about is home insurance. Your home will probably be your largest asset. If it were to be destroyed and you did not have any insurance you could be in serious trouble. Insure cars in a similar manner. You don't want to overburden yourself with insurance payments, but it can be allot cheaper to pay for insurance now rather than paying everything later.

Plan for the expenses you know that you will have in the future. Having to pay for a child's college education can be a major financial setback. Start saving for these sorts of things early. Be cautious investing all of your money in risky things. Diversify your investments so that if you loose on one thing you don't loose everything. Consider consulting a financial expert whenever you invest to see what they think about you investment.

But what do you do once you are in the midst of a huge setback? How do you overcome it? The best thing to do is to not panic and try something stupid. There will probably not be a quick fix. Consider a reasonable way to pay what you need to so that you won't be saddled with debt forever. Consider that you might have to give up things you love in order to put yourself back into a position where your finances will start saving for you again. It will be much better for you to do without some precious things now for a couple of years than it will for you to loose your retirement. Think in terms of the long term and be patient. You can overcome a personal financial setback but not without some sacrifice and planning. Don't borrow huge amounts of money at high interest rates just to make yourself feel better or more secure. Think carefully about the situation and consult some sort of expert. With some perseverance and discipline you will get out of your financial emergency. However, the best approach is to never get into such an emergency in the first place.
