Cutting costs when grocery shopping is one of the most significant areas of spending that you can work on in order to spend less and save more. There are dozens of specific things that can be done on just about every grocery shopping trip that can help you to leave the store with at least a little bit more money in your pocket than you would have had, had you not been thinking about cutting costs. Here are just a few of the many suggestions that you can take to cut costs and add to your savings:

Cut coupons
Grocery shopping savings 101 is all about cutting coupons. Manufacturers are constantly looking to attract new buyers. They do this by making very appealing offers available in order to lure you into becoming a loyal and regular customer. In the eyes of the manufacturer, a good deal for you is an investment that they are willing to make in the hopes that they can hook you into buying more and more products. This is why you see coupons in the mail, the paper, and even online. There is usually a way to save, even if it is just a few cents, on the popular brands who are marketing to generate more interest in their product. More likely than not you can go to the website of a popular brand and find money saving coupons there that you can simply print out and take to your local grocery store. It takes a little work to find the deals that will work for your grocery list, but you will be surprised how quickly saving $.25 here or $1.00 there will add up. If you would like to save even more by using coupons, there are several websites and companies that are frequently offering coupons to customers free of charge include. These sites include GetLocalDeals, HotCoupons.com, and ValPak.

Buy in bulk
Warehouse shopping is very popular and for good reason. Places like Costco and Sam's Club offer bulk items for sale at a discount that ranges on average between 10%-25%. If you are buying for a family, bargains like this are very appealing. One warning about buying in bulk is that it is only beneficial if your family is large enough to be able to eat whatever you buy before the food expires, otherwise you are spending more by paying for wasted food. Warehouse type stores are not the only places to find a good deal on bulk items. If there is an item that you buy a lot, and it cannot be found at a warehouse, see if your usual supermarket will give you a discount for buying it by the case. Many stores have a bulk food section where smaller portions of lower cost items can be bagged by the consumer at a savings that is dollar-by-dollar comparable to buying by the case. Many times the price per ounce of a product sold in bulk is less because the manufacturers are not out the cost of individually packaging the product. Compare the nuts, pretzels, and even candy that you are buying to the options in bulk and you may be surprised how much money you waste on colorful packaging.

Buy generic
Although generic brands are usually plainer looking and do not have all of the commercial hype as national brands in most cases they are almost exactly the same in content as the more popular brands. It is because less money is spent on advertising and packaging that you are able to get the generic product at a lower price. Generic products are most commonly stocked below the national brands on the grocery store shelves. Compare the labels, contents, or ingredients to see for yourself.

Eat seasonally and locally
Eating seasonally and locally can save you money because there is usually an abundance of whatever is seasonal, and often they are on sale. When you eat locally and seasonally, you cut out a lot of the processing, transporting, refrigeration and storage, and nasty preservatives. Instead, you preserve the nutrients, the flavor, the environment, the local economy, and generally, some of your money.
