How to keep yourself from overspending

When it comes to shopping many people find that they tend to overspend, whether it is during the year or only during the holiday seasons. Regardless of what time of year you are overspending money all you are doing is creating more debt that you are going to have to pay off and you could cause yourself to get into financial trouble because you might not be able to make all of your payments during the times that you over spend.

Here are some tips on how to keep your self from overspending.

Tip one:
If you tend to overspend during the Christmas holiday what you should do is set a budget for your Christmas gifts. When determining how much you can afford to spend you will also need to factor in decorations, wrapping paper, tape, etc. Keeping a list with you about what you plan on buying for who will stop the impulse buying and by shopping early you can take advantage of the various sales that are going on at different stores.

Tip two:
Another way to help keep yourself from overspending is to figure out what triggers you to spend money, what makes you want to spend money. Do you spend money because you want to keep up with other people, do you spend money because you are stressed out? No matter the reasons you need to figure out what they are and try to avoid feeling that way.

Tip three:
On of the best ways to avoid overspending is to keep track of what you are spending your money on. Many times we tend to spend money on small to medium sized purchases, such as drinks at the gas station, donuts every morning before work, etc. It is these little purchases that add up.

Tip four:
Another way to keep you from overspending is to develop good spending habits. In today's world it is very easy to make crazy and useless purchases because of how many people own credit cards. When you are considering making a purchase you should ask yourself if it is something that you or your family really needs. If it is something that you don't need then you simply say no.

Tip five:
Another thing to do to keep you from overspending is to think twice about large purchases. Don't simply buy a large purchase on an impulse, give yourself a few days to think it over and talk about why you need it or why you want it. If you don't have any valid reasons other than you think it looks nice or you just simply have to have it because so and so has one then don't buy it.

Tip six:
The best way to stop yourself from overspending is to create a budget for all of your expenses and then stick to that budget. This doesn't mean that you can't eat out or buy a new pair of shoes, but you need to set aside a predetermined amount and then keep track of how much you have spent. When you have spent all the money you have allowed yourself to have for eating out or shopping you simply don't make anymore purchases until the next month. But remember the key to this is to follow through with your budget every month; you would be surprised at how much money you can save.

Just remember that even if you are a compulsive spender by following the tips above and recognizing your behavior you to can keep yourself from overspending.
