How to pay for big medical expenses if you do not have insurance

dr19147307.jpg It's no secret that having medical insurance makes it easier to get those medical bills paid and can also speed up the process. So if you don't have insurance then how to the bills get paid. There are thousands of Americans that don't make enough money to afford insurance but at the same time make too much to qualify for things like Medicaid. So it seems that there is a limbo space in between those that can afford insurance and those that qualify for other programs. If you fall into this limbo category then here are some suggestions on how to pay for big medical expenses if you do not have insurance.

Learn how to negotiate. Although some people may not realize this, everything is negotiable. You may not be able to get them take the entire bill away and pay it for you, but you will probably be able to reduce at least a portion of the bill. You can talk to various service providers to help reduce some of the fees you are responsible for.
Payment plans. If paying the entire balance in full just isn't something you can tackle (and for most people they can't) then ask the hospital or doctor if there is some sort of payment plan or option they will work with you on. Some hospitals for instance after women have delivered a baby and are not able to pay the full balance will offer payment plans with no or little interest. Most hospitals and doctors have some sort of payment plan to help with the bills though so don't forget to ask about one. And make sure you get everything in writing and the payments are realistic for you.
Look through your bill. Most people get their bills in the mail and just look at the balance that they owe to the hospital or doctor or whoever it may be. The mistake in that is that even billing offices make mistakes and sometimes they make big ones. Makes sure when you get the bill you review it and make sure that everything is accurate. Errors have accounted for many people overpaying on medical bills and by the time they realize it may be too late to change anything.
Look for some other health provider programs. There are some other programs out there that can help individuals and families afford going to the doctor and making visits to the hospital like Medicare and Medicaid. There are restrictions of course on how and who will qualify for these services but it doesn't hurt to ask around and make some phone calls. For example, to qualify for Medicare you have to be older than a certain age and have certain medical conditions. With Medicaid one of the main stipulations is how much money you make. If you fall under the allotted amount of income then you may qualify for Medicaid.
Employers also have some great options when it comes to healthy insurance or medical expenses. Some employers offer expense programs like a flex spending account where you can take out so much money from your check each month. If you know that there will be medical bills coming in from a baby or perhaps a surgery then you can make sure that so much money comes out of your check each month. Another option is a cafeteria plan. Not all employers offer something like this but if they do you should take full advantage of it. They work in much the same way as a flex spending account only instead of taking money out of your check monthly you have to deicide on an amount of money to put into your cafeteria plan for the year. As you spend money on medical bills and other such medical expenses you can be reimbursed for them through the money you have taken out for your cafeteria plan. Naturally there will always be emergencies but if you can plan ahead these types of programs can really pay off.

There are many different things you can do to learn how to pay for big medical expenses if you do not have insurance. These are just a few options but if researched hard enough you could find many other unconventional ways to get those medical bills paid.
