Create a list of categories that you can divide your expenses into. Some examples include: food, clothing, transportation, rent/mortgage, insurance, medical, car payment, etc.
Look through your bill statements, checkbook, receipts and any other records you might have to find out how much you spent in each category over the last few months. Six months to a year of records will give you a really good idea of the funds that you have to work with.
Add each expense category separately. Then find the average for that category by dividing by the number of months you have records for. Write that number down under the proper category.
Write down all of the monthly income that you have. Subtract your expenses from your income. This number will give you an idea of what you can afford to put into savings every month.
Make some adjustments and prioritize
For those who find that their expenses are more then their income, it may be even more difficult to find a way to save money. Many people choose not to start a savings plan at all because they feel like they cannot spare even the smallest amount of money. The truth is that there is always some way to cut back on spending, but you must be willing to make some sacrifices. Here's what you can do:
Look over the categories in your budget and decide if there is some place you can make adjustments. Do you spend more money on entertainment than on rent? Could you eat out less and save money by cooking at home? A good rule of thumb is to start small. Cut back on categories of expenses by five percent at first. Be creative in finding ways that you can continue to cut back on spending while still enjoying the occasional night out or shopping spree.
Deal with one budget category at a time to keep from being overwhelmed. There are many ways to cut expenses little by little in each of the categories. When you have whittled at the biggest category, go to the next, and so on until your income and your expenses match up.
We tend to find a way to afford the things that mean the most to us. Make saving money a priority. Before you do anything else with your paycheck decide to put a certain amount of it aside for your savings. You may be surprised at how quickly it adds up and at how simple it can be do take back your finances.
