How to use Yahoo finance to research mutual funds


Mutual funds are considered the best and safest investments by some financial experts. When it comes to investing in mutual funds, research is a vital part of successful investing. While every mutual fund has a manager who controls and directs the fund's investments according to the fund's objective, such as long-term growth, high current income, or stability of principal, doing your own research is still important as it helps you to invest your money wisely by giving you the knowledge you need to make informed decisions.

How do I research mutual funds?
Online is the best place to go to research mutual funds. Some websites will charge a one-time or monthly fee to access all of their information and mutual fund research tools. Whether you opt to do this or not is up to you, but many times you will be able to find the same research elsewhere for free.

Yahoo Finance is user-friendly, so researching mutual funds should not be difficult. First, go to their website at http://finance.yahoo.com/. You can also go to the Yahoo home page and click on their "finance" link. Once there, you have a number of options. The "investing" tab at the top will have a drop down menu; select "mutual funds," and it will take you directly to the mutual funds page, which will provide you with a number of options.

If you're going to Yahoo Finance to research your mutual funds, there are many tools that will allow you to do that, including:
Fund screener. This tool allows you to search all of the mutual funds in the market by entering in certain criteria, then displaying all of the funds that meet your specific criteria. The fund screener lets you to search thousands of potential mutual funds using a number of different criteria, including ratings, performance reviews, purchasing and fees, or holdings. You can create your own fund screener screen, or you can use a number of preset screens.
Top Performers. Learn the top performing mutual funds and search them by the overall top performers. Or, you can select from the top-performing US Stock funds, Bond funds, international stock funds, or hybrid funds.
Fund prospectus. Yahoo Finance also provides a free fund prospectus for mutual funds that categorizes the funds alphabetically, by fund family, or by investment objective.
Message boards. The mutual funds investment boards allow you to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about mutual funds and your investments with other investors. You can rate messages and postings and then organize them by their ratings.
