Install new toilets

It might seem odd to think that a new toilet could save you money but it can, especially if you need to replace an existing toilet already, and you replace it wisely. Every time you flush your toilet you're spending money on the water you flush down it. The cost of the water used isn't that much per flush, however, if you have a toilet that uses a lot of water, this can really add up over time. For someone intending to live in a house ten years or more, getting a toilet that uses less water can mean big savings.

Watersense is program much like Energy Star, that helps you save money and use less water. They have a few toilets out on the market, that are really reasonably priced, and can help you save some money. An EPA WaterSense toilet is a toilet uses 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf) or less. Normal toilets sold today use 1.6 gpf.

While there is an initial investment of $100-$150, if you were to replace your existing toilet with an energy efficient one, it may take a couple of years to see the savings. However, if you are building new, or need to replace your toilet anyway, this is a fantastic way to cut your monthly water cost down. These toilets cost about the same as a regular toilet, and are 20% more efficient.

In general, the cost of water is about $6/ 1000 gallons. Your water may cost less, or more if you live in a place with less water resources. So, check your water bill to figure out how much per gallon you pay, and thus, how much per flush you will save by getting a more water efficient toilet.

If you have a 20 year old home with original toilets and 4 people live there, you would save an average of $100 a year, or so on water, and conserve 16,000 gallons. So, you save money, which you can put in your cash reserve, and you save the environment at the same time.

The number of people in your home, and the age of your home are going to come into play with how much you could be saving by having water efficient toilets, as well as your cost of water. So, for some the savings will be far greater than it will be for others.

You will want to install the toilets yourself, which is relatively simple, although may take an hour or so. Any time you replace a toilet, be sure to choose a Watersense toilet. If you have older toilets, this is the way to go. If your toilet was made after 1994 then it is already a 1.6 gpf model. That means you'll save a lot less by switching over to Watersense. But if your toilet is over 15 years old then it is likely worth the cost to switch to new Watersense toilet.
