Learning to Cut the Expense of Entertainment Down

Learning to cut the expense of entertainment down can seem like it would be limiting and less fun, but, actually, can be quite the opposite. There are many ways to cut down entertainment expenses without feeling completely deprived.

1. Check out the library
In the age of the Internet and coffee shop bookstores, the library can be a forgotten place for some. But it is the ultimate entertainment bargain. It's free! The library is great for giving books you're interested in a test-run. How often have you purchased a book, started reading it, and it didn't meet your expectations. With a library card, you can read it for free and save the expense. If you like collecting books and/or particularly enjoy what you're reading, you can buy it later and have a no-regret purchase. If not, you return it - and save yourself up to $25 (the average cost of a new, hardcover book).

In addition, libraries have other entertainment options besides books. Many libraries loan movies and audio books, often for free or for a minimal fee. While the selection of movies at the library may not be as good as your local Blockbuster, there are a lot of great, undiscovered movies there. Often, the library is a great place to find the old, black and white classics. For a movie night, you could review the Academy Awards' Best Picture winner list and pick one of the older ones. Audio books are also a great source of entertainment - they are fantastic for the daily commute or for long road trips. You'll be surprised how fast your trip goes by when you're busy listening to a good book. And you get that all with just a library card.

2. Host a potluck dinner
For many, eating out is not only a form of entertainment, but also a chance to socialize and connect with friends. However, eating out, even a few times a week, can really add up and take a toll on your budget, especially if you're trying to save money and cut entertainment expenses. Instead of spending money at a restaurant, try hosting a potluck dinner. This is not only an inexpensive way to enjoy the company of friends, but it can also be a lot of fun.

A potluck is a great money-saver when it comes to entertainment. All you have to do is prepare a main dish and host is at your home. Assign different courses or drinks to others to bring. One fun thing to do with a potluck is to do a theme. You could suggest an international potluck and have everyone bring some kind of ethnic dish. The variety of foods, possibly ones that guests have never tried, is a great conversation starter. In addition to the potluck, you could also pull out some favorite board games after dinner or have a movie night (with free movies from the library).

3. Do your research
If you are going to make a large purchase or go on a vacation, do your research. It's easy to go to an electronics store, see the beautiful HD flat-screen TV's, and feel tempted to splurge. Resist, do some research, and you may save hundreds of dollars. There are a variety of sites on the Internet rating different brands of electronics, based on pros, cons, and features of the item you are interested in. You can also compare prices at different store sites. If you are an informed consumer, you have much more buying power.

The same goes for planning a big vacation. Research the best days to go - going in the off-season can often save a lot of money on room rates, entertainment packages, and airfare. Check out different packages on travel sites. Booking further in advance can also save a lot of money when travelling.

There are many other ways to cut expense of entertainment down. The key is to be creative and open-minded. You may need to make some lifestyle changes, but you may find the changes more fun than you expected.
