Living on a budget, three ways to make it work

Living on a budget? There are three full proof ways to make it work. When you are living on a budget takes some practice in addition to trial and error.

First, the best way to make your budget work is to make a budget that can be lived with, and within. This means simply creating a basic budget that has room for growth, in addition to being simple to follow in the beginning.

When you first create a budget, it should be just the basics. That way you can leave a little room for growing pains. Here is what should be included in the first draft of your living budget.

Your current income, this includes paychecks, child support, alimony, or any other income that can be planned on each month.

You will then want to list all of your bills that are consistent each month. This would include the rent or mortgage, utilities, car payments, insurance, and credit card payments. Do not have the budget set up so tight that there is not any room for unexpected expenses. The reason that many people have problems with their budgets is that there is no room for inconsistencies.

Second, you need to have a budget that allows for emergencies, and entertainment. This is something that will inevitably disrupt the payments of a perfect budget because these expenses will occur and yet if they are not planned for, you will have to take money from another area to cover the cost.

The third way that you can make your budget work for you is to set up twice a month that you will sit down and pay the bills listed on the budget before you spend any other money. At this time, you can also track your spending, and reconcile your checkbook so that everything is completed at one time, and you will not be making any spending issues occur.

There are several ways to create a budget, and financial tracking system. You can do it with pen and paper, with a spreadsheet, or you can purchase or download a free version of personal financing software.

After you have created a flexible budget with the basics, you will be able to then track your spending for a couple months along with sticking to the budget as much as possible. After the tracking, you can then see the spending that occurs that was not planned for. You will also be able to see spending that is not necessary.

Once that is done, you will know where you can cut back in order to adjust your budget, and then add in more important payments like to your personal savings, investments for your future, and emergency funds for long term issues and retirement.

A good budget takes time, and even the greatest financial consultants have taken years of practice to get to where they understand the process of a budget, and personal finance. Give yourself the chance to make it work, and do not get impatient with yourself. You will need to see what you spend, before you can plan what you should be spending it on.

If you are not going to hire a financial consultant, then you will need to learn to create your own plan for budgeting. This is not impossible, or even that difficult, it is just going to take some patience and planning.
