Long distance friendship tips

Having a long distance relationship is hard no matter what. You can try and try to talk but it doesn't always work out. Here are some tips for long distance friendships.
Call each other often. It doesn't have to be every day, but call each other once in a while. You will be able to hear each other's voices and be able to talk. You don't have to call about anything important, just talk about things you did when you were living close to each other.

Talk to each other about the new places you live. Tell each other about any new friends or anything big in your life. You want to keep each other informed. Telling each other about each other's new lives will help to include each other in them still. Often when people move they feel like they don't know about each other's lives and so start to fade out of them. Introduce friends if you can over the phone, or just talk to each other about anything.
Email each other. If you keep up a constant email to each other and email every few days or so, you really keep in touch. You tell each other everything and the friendship remains strong. The great thing about email is that you do it on your own schedule. You can decide when you want to email and when you want to write back. You don't have to worry about things like time zones or if they might be in the middle of dinner.
Send each other pictures. Pictures are the best way to show each other what is going on because you see what is actually going on. You can see the people your friend is talking about and see where she lives. You don't have to document everything, but send pictures of really important things or things that you talk about a lot.
Visit each other. It can be planned or a surprise. Take turns visiting each other, say every year or every other year. It will be a nice vacation for both of you and will be a great time to see each other and talk face to face. Just because you email doesn't mean that you don't need to see each other. It is a great way for you to return to the place that you once lived and see how it has changed and a great way for your old friend to visit the new place that you live and talk about all the time.
Don't forget holidays and birthdays. Send each other cards or gifts. It doesn't have to be much, but sending each other gifts is another great way to remember each other and to talk to each other. Send something really meaningful and that you know the other person would like. You don't have to send a present for every holiday, but maybe just Christmas and your friend's birthday. Make sure that you send a card that you hand write and really put something thoughtful in. Don't forget to call each other on holidays too.
Keeping in touch with old friends is so important. You had a great relationship and it is horrible to have to waste it and forget about it just because one of you moved. Try some of these tips. Even if you just email each other you will be able to keep in touch and really get to build your friendship even more.
