Oatmeal.

Oatmeal is a very low cost breakfast idea. It is inexpensive to purchase, and is cooked easily with water. Of course, you can also customize the oatmeal to your tastes by adding to it. This makes it a great low cost breakfast that you can eat each day of the week without feeling like you are eating the same foods over and over. You can add variety by stirring things into your oatmeal, like nuts, seeds, dried fruit, fresh fruit, sugar, cream, milk, cinnamon, etc. Oatmeal is also very good for you. So, not only is it easy on your wallet, but it also gives you many of the nutrients you need, and gives you energy.

Do not buy the oatmeal packets, you pay for the convenience of the individual portions of oatmeal with the sugar already mixed in. If you want to save money, and have a low cost breakfast that is filling, then buy raw oats. Buying cans of oatmeal and adding your own flavorings to them, and portioning them out to your own liking is going to be far better than, and far less expensive than many other breakfast options, even if you choose to add expensive things, like almonds, etc. to it.

Low cost oatmeal recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal (not instant)

  • 1 cup low-fat milk

  • 2 medium apples - cored and peeled and diced

  • 1/2 cup crushed walnuts

  • 2 Tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

DIrections:
Cook oatmeal per package directions. Stir in the apples pieces, 3/4 of the nuts, cinnamon and maple syrup. Then distribute oats among four bowls. Top with milk and remaining walnuts. Serves 4.

Pancakes.

Pancakes are a favorite of many children, and that is good news for parents as pancakes are a low cost breakfast food. You can buy a ten pounds bag of Krusteaz pancake mix for about $5 from many warehouse food stores, and that one bag, of add water only mix will make 220-240 pancakes. This is a great price for several breakfasts. You can surely make a bag of this go far, and you will find that pancakes are a low cost breakfast that is delicious, and can have variety. Just like with oatmeal, you can add variety to your pancakes by mixing in fruit, chocolate chips, berries, cinnamon, sugar, etc. Or you can top your pancakes with just about anything you can think of. This means, not only is your breakfast low cost, it also will work for everyone in the family, no matter how different their taste buds are. You can put basic syrup on them, butter, whipped cream and berries, jam, pureed fruit, etc.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it is the first fuel your body gets after a long fast. It is what starts your body off, either right or wrong, and gives you the energy you need for the rest of the day.

Breakfast helps with weight loss because it gives you a metabolism boost, and helps you get your blood sugars level. Eating a meal when you first wake up is going to help your fat burning ability increase, and keep you at a healthy weight.

Breakfast is literally the fuel your body runs on when you wake up in the morning. If you skip the meal you are running on empty as it is typically several hours since the last time you ate. You do not need to eat to sleep, but you do need to eat to have proper brain and body function during the day.

Eating breakfast also keeps you from getting so hungry that you binge eat, or eat bad for you foods. It helps you to keep your appetite on an even keel, and thus eliminates much of the desire to snack uncontrollably, or to eat convenience foods over healthier options.

Breakfast gives your body the fuel it needs to think, and your nervous system the right stuff to work properly. If you skip it you are forcing your body to work harder to get the same results, which often leads to fatigue, stress etc.

This is usually very inexpensive as pancakes are typically made from four, water, salt, and some oil. These are all fairly inexpensive ingredients, and if you can find a recipe that your family enjoys, it can be a fun, cheap, family breakfast.

Basic Pancake recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, stirred or sifted before measuring

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg, slightly beaten

  • 1 1/2 cups milk

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Preparation:
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine egg and milk; add to flour mixture, stirring only until smooth. Blend in melted butter. Cook on a hot, greased griddle, using about 1/4 cup of batter for each pancake. Cook until brown on one side and around edge; turn and brown the other side. Recipe for pancakes serves 4.

Eggs.

Eggs are a cheap or low cost breakfast option. In addition to costing very little, they are also something you can do a lot with, in other words, there is a lot of variety to be had with eggs. You can eat them scrambled, poached, boiled, deviled, fried, over-easy, over-hard, etc. Thus, you can have eggs often, and not get sick of them as a breakfast food. Eggs have gone up in price some in the past few years, but they are still far less expensive then many other breakfast options, and they are a delicious protein that can make your breakfast filling and healthy.

One of the other big benefits of eating eggs as a low cost breakfast is that you can do a lot with them. You can scramble them and put them into a tortilla, and put salsa on it for a breakfast burrito. You can even add beans, which make for a low cost breakfast. You can eat them with veggies and other foods chopped up and mixed in like an omelet. That is a great way to clean out your produce drawer and add flavor to breakfast. You can eat them plain, with salt and pepper. There are several ways to make the eggs into different breakfast dishes. They can be used as a main part of breakfast, or as a side to breakfast. You can mix them with other low cost breakfast options such as pancakes. You can add meats and cheese to them, or you can eat them plain. There are a lot of ways to eat eggs, and eggs are delicious and healthy way to have inexpensive breakfasts.

Low cost egg recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, optional

  • Dash pepper, optional

  • 1 teaspoon butter or cooking oil OR cooking spray

Directions:
In a small bowl, beat together the eggs and water with the salt and pepper, if desired, until blended.
In a 7- to 10-inch omelet pan or skillet over medium-high heat, heat the butter until it's just hot enough to sizzle a drop of water. Pour in the egg mixture. (The mixture should set immediately at the edges). Carefully push the cooked portions at the edges of the pan toward the center so the uncooked portions can reach the hot pan surface, tilting the pan and moving the cooked portions as necessary. When the top of the omelet is thickened fill the omelet, if desired, meaning add cheese, veggies, etc. Then with a pancake turner, fold the omelet in half or roll it. Serve.

Potatoes.

Potatoes are a great low cost breakfast option, they taste great, can be prepared in several different ways, and are extremely cost effective. You can grate potatoes to make hash browns. You can chop them into bite size pieces and eat fried potatoes, etc. There are a lot of ways to prepare potatoes, not all of them are good for breakfasts, but potatoes make a great addition to any breakfast, so whether you use them as a main dish, or a side, they are cheap and easy to make. You usually eat potatoes with ketchup, salt, or pepper. They do not require expensive things to make them taste better.

Low cost breakfast potato recipe:

Ingredients:
3 1/4 cup potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1/4-inch pieces?1/4 cup Vegetable oil?1 cup onions, chopped?1 cup green chiles, seeded and chopped?3 cloves garlic, minced?1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste?1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper??

Directions:
Soak chopped potatoes in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse them to remove the excess starch. Heat a large frying pan over medium to medium-high heat, add the oil, and when it is very hot but not smoking, add all ingredients. Cook, stirring often, until the potatoes are tender and well browned, about 10 to 15 minutes.?

Crepes.

Crepes are another low cost breakfast, they are made with flour, eggs and water, all inexpensive ingredients. you can then fill them with whatever you have. They can be filled with cheeses and meats, or can be filled with fruits and sweets like whipped cream or syrup. There are many ways to eat a crepe, which makes them a low cost breakfast because they provide a great way for you to clean out your fridge, and use the ends and pieces of things you have, such as the last few slices of bacon from a package, or the end of a tub of cream cheese. Or, you can clean out the produce drawer, and stuff your crepe with vegetables.

Low cost crepe recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 T melted butter

Directions:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly. Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot.
