Maximize each semester's credit hours

One of the easiest ways to cut the cost of college and most importantly find ways to save is to maximize each semester's credits hours. By doing this you can attend college in both a time and cost efficient way and free up money to save along the way. Here is what you need to know about how you can maximize each semester's credit hours-

  • Take as many credit hours as you can per semester. Too many students in an effort to not overload themselves take fewer than the maximum credit hours. An important point to keep in mind when maximizing hours is this: while most colleges consider full-time credit hours to be 12 you can often take up to 16 credit hours for the same tuition! This is like getting 4 college credit hours for free. The initial cost savings on taking 4 extra credit hours (usually the equivalent of one class) can amount to a savings of several hundreds to even a thousand dollars per semester depending on where the student is attending school. If the student follows this enrollment pattern over the course of 8 semesters (typical 4 year college enrollment) the costs savings can add up significantly. While the semester may be a little harder keeping your eye on the goal of graduation can make it much easier.
  • Take the right semester credit hours- Planning is the name of the game when laying out credits to take in college. Certain classes have pre-requisites that must be taken. Other classes must be taken in a sequence. Students who pay careful attention to what credits they are registering for over the long-term are saving money. If you carefully lay out a four year plan for taking classes you can then take your classes in the right order and not be stuck taking that expensive summer school or out-of sequence class that will costs you additional tuition money. Keep in mind that taking one class can often cost more per hour than a full semester's worth of classes.
  • Do not take classes that you really do not have to. While college is certainly a time to explore your options students who are working to maximize credits and save money will not be distracted by classes they do not need. Remember while pottery can be fun-its costing you money and time. And while you may want to see what interior design is all about if you are an chemistry major you are getting away from your plan which is costing you money and time
  • Test out of what you can.
  • Remember its not just about the tuition. While the major expense for most college students is tuition there are other financial factors as well. Students who maximize their credits each semester spend less time in college which not only means less tuition but less spent in living expenses. With living expenses averaging about $2500 dollars per semester for college students living away from home cutting college by a semester or two can result in some serious savings. It's important for both your time and your money that you have planned to maximize the credit yours you are taking each semester.
