Monitoring your credit, why you need to do it
Credit is an important part of your life. Believe it or not, but your credit rating could determine some fairly important things in your life. Will you be able to borrow money to purchase a car or a house with a terrible credit rating? Let's face it, we know that it takes borrowing to get the basic stuff you will need in this world. The lending industry is one of the best things about our economy. It allows all sorts of people to do things that they would otherwise never be able to do, such as own a car or purchase a home.

However, there are some problems with the system as well. Perhaps you have heard of a credit report? Because lending and borrowing are such an important part of the overall economy, banks and other lending institutions need to know if you are a trustworthy borrower. They need to know if you will eventually be able to pay them back.
When people cannot pay back the banks they borrow money from their can be serious repurcutions for the economy. The current financial crisis is the result of banks lending too much money to people who cannot pay it back. As a result, there is something like a credit report, which gives banks and lenders an idea of the history of the borrower. It shows them if the borrower has been able to pay back their debts quickly and without any trouble. It shows them what payments the borrower might have missed. As you can see, these documents can be very serious. You want an excellent credit report if you are going to borrow anything, and especially if you are going to borrow anything large.
So why should you monitor your credit? Is it something you can change? Isn't your credit basically set in stone? Naturally you can improve your credit by borrowing and making regular payments. You can fairly quickly improve it, but it will take time to make a dramatic change in credit. But this does not mean that you should not check your credit report regularly. There are a couple of reasons for it. First, you need to know what your credit is like if you are going to try to change it. If you don't know if there is a problem you will not be able to do anything about it. Building good credit is a slow process and nothing that you can fix over night.
Another important reason for you to look at your credit report is that they can be wrong. Several different agencies report credit and they do not always get it right. You might find that there has been a serious mistake that has lowered your credit score. If this is the case you need to contact the agency and set things right. You will also want to check with multiple agencies to make sure that they have all changed the mistake. Remember that you can do a free credit check once a year (it's the law). Take advantage of this opportunity to make sure that everything is reported as it should be. Only you will actually care about your credit report. You are the only one that will catch the mistakes and will be able to do anything about them. Take control of your credit history and you will help to ensure your financial future. Keep building good credit by borrowing responsibly and planning to pay it back. Good luck with all of your borrowing and credit building!
