Write-offs (or deductibles) are the government's way of rewarding taxpayers when they've done something the government likes. There are plenty of write-offs which people often forget. Not forgetting any write-offs at tax time is important! This ensures you get back every possible dollar the government is willing to give you.

The opportunity for mistakes is almost unlimited. The thousands of little mistakes made at tax time, short you out of money and save the government millions. The simple mistake of inputting your social security number in wrong, to who knows how many people forgot or never knew about a deduction that could save them money, are not the kinds of things the government is going to lose sleep over.

Here are some common forgotten tax write-offs:
Home

Mortgages, mortgage interest, and mortgage points are often forgotten, but can be tax write offs. Any property taxes are also fully deductible on your tax return. If you have a home equity loan, the interest you pay should be a tax write-off as well. People that also work at home can take a home office tax deduction by writing off a percentage of your heating bill, electricity, or rent.

Vehicle
If you need a car for work purposes then you can write off your car. You can also get the mileage of your car written off. The mileage has been raised in recently because gas prices are climbing. You can also write off cars you donate, depending on the organization that you donate to.

Small Business
Small business owners who are self employed can usually deduct their personal health care costs from their tax bill. Those with a Health Savings Account can also deduct that. Self owned business expenses can also be a write off.

Child care
When both parents are working, you can use the child care tax deduction if your child goes to preschool.

The number one reason people forget write offs at tax time, is because they are not organized! Many people try to come up with receipts at the last possible minute and they make tax time a real hassle. It is important to be organized before tax time comes around. Something as simple as organization should not keep you from your deserved tax return.

Ways to not forget write-offs at tax time:
Be organized

Be organized when doing your taxes!! Nothing is more important than organization. Make sure receipts and other important paperwork are kept up to date and are ready when tax time comes. This will not only help you remember certain write-offs, but it will save you tons of time.

Print a reminder list
There are a number of other write-offs that you can cash in on than what is listed above. The best possible thing you can do when organizing your taxes is to download or print out a tax deduction checklist so you don't forget anything. If you can take advantage of every possible write off, then you should.

Professional tax planning
With proper and careful planning of personal finances and taxes, you can save a lot of money in a number of cases. A professional tax planning organization enables you to optimize taxes payable on your company's profit, on your individual income and on any other investments. Get an accountant or CPA that can help you with your taxes and this will help you understand how write offs work as well as ensuring you don't forget to include anything.

Make sure to capitalize on any and all possible tax write-offs. It is your right to claim possession of the money that belongs to you. Don't let a simple mistake of forgetting certain write-offs be something you do this tax season. Not forgetting write-offs at tax time will ensure you have more money in your pocket at the end of the year. You work hard for your money, so make sure you see the most of it!
