Online banking pros and cons

accountant37004036.jpgBanking can be a bit of a pain. Many of us are constantly concerned about how much money we have in our bank account. We wonder if our balance is shifting in the wrong direction. It is hard to makes sense of you total balance when deposits and withdrawls seem to take a great deal of time to go through. Everything has traditionally been done on paper in banks, which slows things down and is a little bit scarry. So is there a better system? Maybe. Many of us have heard of or are using online banking to do all of our banking stuff. It can be so convenient to just turn on a computer and get all the information you need. But are there some cons of online banking? What exactly are the pros of such a system? Is your money really safe when using online banking?

There are some great benefits associated with online banking. Probaby the best is that you can get a sense for your balance at almost anytime. You can see what has come in and what has gone out. This can certainly beat having to go down to the bank all the time to make sure that you are not in the red. Besides this, online banking has been generally secure in the past. The servers and systems used to protect your information are generally quite secure. Also, this can have an advantage over normal banking where your information can be easily overheard. However, you also need to be very cautious about the way you deal with internet banking information. Your password or username should never be shared.

Online banks themselves can provide a real advantage because they do not have the same expenses of other banks. They don't have to spend the same amount of money running expensive branches, which means that they can turn the savings over to you. This means that you could get a better interest rate when using an online bank. Online banks also often offer loans at very low APRs.

So what could the cons of online banking be? Some of us might have experienced one problem, which is that the online system can make mistakes. Sometimes the appropriate amounts are not reported. This happens fairly rarely but it has happened. Besides this, sometimes people become to sure of the accuracy of their online reports. You cannot, for example be entirely sure that the online totals for your balance are completely up to date. As with any normal banking it can take time for the debits and credits to show up on your account balance. If you think that they are immediatley deducted you are wrong. This means that it is equally important to keep some sort of record of your expenditures. Don't just assume that your balance is secure as it appears. You will need to keep a careful record and compare it to what appears on your online statement.

Online banking can be an excellent way to manage your money and check on accounts, but it is not a substitute for being careful with money and recording what you spend. So consider what wil benefit you best before you decide to do all of your banking online. Many people use a combination of online banking and branch visits. If you are terrified of technology and the internet you probably will not want to use this method, but it is fairly simple for those of us with some basic computer skills. Chances are that many people will be changing to online banking in the future.
