Add it to the budget

One great way for a person to start today to save their money is by adding "Savings" to a column in their budget. Just as a person pays their mortgage or their car payment each month, they should also pay themselves, or their savings account, each month too. They can decide to pay a specific amount each paycheck or pay a percentage of their yearly income. As long as they are continually adding to their savings account it doesn't really matter how they do it.

Energy efficiency

A person can save money by changing out the appliances in their house for energy efficient appliances. New household appliances such as washer and dryers, heaters, air conditioning units, water heaters, dishwasher, refrigerators, etc., can save families hundreds of dollars on their utility bills each year.

If a person or a family is not in the position to purchase new appliances they can still do their part to save money on electricity and other utility bills. For example, unplugging appliances and other cords, even when the appliance is off can help a person save money. So things such as toasters, cell phone chargers, and radios should be unplugged unless they are in use.

Coupons

Using coupons is a great way for a person or a family to save a lot of money, especially on their grocery bills. And a person does not have to spend hours and hours looking at ads to save their family money. If a person just takes an hour or two each week to write a list of what they need to purchase for the week and then compare it to the coupons they received in the mail or in their newspaper.

A person can also look for coupons online for things they purchase all of the time or for something they plan to just get once. This does not take long since there are more and more coupon sites that have links to the coupons that are available that week. Sometimes a person just needs to search for the item they want to buy and they will find a coupon for it.

Little ways

Usually all the little ways people and families can save money will add up and end up going a long way. For example, when a person uses cash they should keep their change in one place instead of leaving some in their car, some in a purse, some in their pockets, etc. That change will quickly add up and a person can wind up having a lot of money that may have ended up going to waste had they not kept track of it.

A person can also save a lot of money by buying things when they are on sale. Then when they need the item, and it is not on sale, they already have it and do not have to waste the money buying it full price.

Waiting

Waiting is a great way for a person to save money. A lot of people buy things too quickly, without really thinking about the purchase. It is best if a person thinks about whether or not they really need the item, and that they think about how they are spending their hard earned money and whether or not the item is worth that money.

Many times a person who has waited to purchase an item will end up deciding that the purchase is not worth it. And sometimes, if they decide they do want to purchase the item after waiting a little while, it might be on sale.
