Take control of spending

Spend, spend, spend, it is easy to do, and can have lasting consequences. If you get in a habit of spending more than you should, you could keep yourself from being able to get in a home, buy a car, pay for your education, etc. Debt and over-spending go hand in hand. This is unhealthy financial behavior. So, let's take a look at what you can do to take control of your spending:

  1. Track it. If you do not know what your current spending habits are, how can you change them? You can't. So, track your spending. You can track it for a week, a month, etc. then determine where your leaks are. When you track your spending it exposes the areas where you are spending far more than you should. For example, if you find that you are spending several hundred dollars a month on clothing, just from browsing and random trips to the mall, then you can start to limit those, or set a budget for yourself for those kinds of expenditures.
  2. Find ways to limit it. Limiting spending is a difficult task, and what works for one person may not work for another. For some people a cash budget works wonders because once the money is gone, they stop spending. For others a budget is all they need. For some, tracking their spending works. And for others, it takes cutting up the credit cards, and limiting trips out of the house. Whatever it takes to make it harder for you to overspend, do it.
  3. Set goals that help. Sometimes the best way to control your spending is to have a goal you are working toward. When you are saving up for a home or a car, or a big ticket item, the cute shirt at the mall is not as appealing. If you are saving for something, or have a goal to do something you think before you buy. You make dinner because you would rather save the money then eat out. Goals help you get your priorities in line.
  4. Learn frugal behavior. Being good with money is not something you are born with. It is not an innate ability. It is a learned behavior, it takes practice, study, etc. If you want to control your spending, focus on learning frugal behavior. Read about it, attend lectures, conferences, etc. Practice what you learn. Ask someone that is good at it for tips. They may be able to impart some wisdom to you that will help you in your struggle with spending. They may give you some good tips for how to save money here and there so when you do spend it is not as much.
  5. Live without. One of the most effective ways to control your spending is simply to do without. If you can't make it work with what you already have, you don't have it. Instead of asking what you need, ask what you can do with what you have. Learn to live without and overspending will no longer be as big of a problem.
