If you are searching for financial security and are spending more money than you make, you will simply never get there. Many people think that making more money is the answer, but it really has to be a combination of making more money and spending less of it as well. Neither of these is particularly easy to do, but both are possible if you are willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen. Many people think about their finances in a small box and don't really consider how it spills over into other areas of life. Being smart with finances will almost certainly bring other blessing as well.
Spending less than you make is a great idea, but isn't always easy. But there are so many ways you can cut your expenses that many don't even know where to start. Start with a good understanding of where all of your money is going each month. Very few people actually keep a budget or know where all of their money is going. Saving receipts seems like a trivial thing to do, but it can help you understand where most of your money is going and knowing where it is going is the first step in changing that process. When you have found out where your money is going, you can then start working on changing the amount of money you spend on certain items. When people realize how much money they spend on something like coffee or soda, they realize how much money they could be spending on something else that is really more important.
Another very important aspect of living within your means is using credit properly and making sure that you are not taking on unnecessary debt just to buy things that are cool or nice. Buying a new plasma TV is really cool and can be a fun and exciting thing, but really isn't necessary, especially if you don't have the money set aside to buy it. Buying with cash, or using a credit card as a convenience when you have the cash in the bank, can be a very satisfying way to buy something. Set a goal and save up money to buy the thing you want and reward yourself by having a good time when you go out to buy it. A good rule to live by is to avoid impulse purchases, especially on high tech items that will probably be outdated before you even get them home. When you find something you like or want, tell yourself and the salesperson you need a day or two to think about it. If you can get through another day without it, you can probably do without it for a long enough period to buy it without using credit.
Decide what you are willing to cut back on and if you are truly committed to living within your means. Evaluate everything you spend money on, from the food you eat to the TV services you pay for and everything in between. It is very satisfying to realize that you really can change the way you live and make your life better by paying attention the basics of living within your means.
