Review expenses
Many people throw a lot of money away because they do not plan how they will spend their money each month or each paycheck. Instead of a person wasting this money, a person can save it.
Before a person can start saving money, and even before they can set up a budget so they can save money, a person needs to review their expenses. To do this a person needs to write down and keep track of all of their spending. It is important that both major and minor expenses be written down. A few dollars here and a few dollars there quickly add up to even several hundreds of dollars every couple of months.
Go without
Sometimes creating a savings will require a person to go without some luxuries for a little while. After a person has reviewed their spending habits they should be able to see where they may have to cut back. Even though doing without a few things may seem like a big deal at first, most people get used to their new lifestyle pretty quickly. And when times get rough they will definitely appreciate their savings account more than their extra doughnut each morning, or their monthly trip to the movies.
Add it in the budget
A great tip to help someone save money is for them to include savings in their budget. Most people treat savings as a completely different category in their budget, but sometimes it can be easier if a person thinks about the savings column of their budget as a bill they have to pay. Adding money to a savings account is just like a person paying a bill; it is just that they are paying it to themselves instead of to the credit card company, phone company, etc.
If a person decides to treat their savings as a bill they should decide how often they want to pay their savings account. This can be every other week, once a month, or once every six months; whatever is easiest for the person to do depending on when they get paid. It is also a good idea for the person to decide how much they are going to pay. This way they can include this amount in their budget and do not end up running out of money each month before they pay their savings bill.
Do it first
Sometimes people find it hard to save money because after paying all of their bills and expenses each month they may end up only breaking even; or worse, not having enough money to pay their bills, etc. If most of these people would put money into savings first they would be able to have enough money for all of their expenses as well as be able to create a good savings.
Of course this does not apply to everyone because some people really do not have enough money to pay for all of their expenses. But there are many people who spend a little money here and a little money there on things they do not need. They may not even realize they are spending the money. All of this money that they are pretty much just throwing away could all be saved. If a person saves money and pays their bills and other expenses first, they may not have the extra money to throw around each month, but they will be able to build a good savings.
