Travel last minute

One way to save money on travel is to be able to travel last minute. No matter where you want to go, what time of year it is, or what your budget is, you can usually save money if you have flexibility in your travel ability. Why? Because most places will offer discounted rates in order to reach capacity.
Let's look at some examples:

The average cost of a cruise for 7 days to the Bahamas is between $800 and $1400 dollars. If the cruise line has a cruise that leaves in less than a week, and they only have three or four cabins empty, they may offer those cabins for a deep discount, simply in order to fill them. If you can pay for the cruise, and be able to leave within the week for it, you could get the same 7 day cruise that one passenger paid $1400 for, for $500. Your cabin may be smaller, or in a less desirable location on board the ship, but the food, entertainment, and destinations are all going to be the same. Now, for this kind of deal to happen, you have to watch prices, and pay attention to the cost, you have to have a travel agent that is willing to inform you of any good deals they get, and you will have to have flexibility in your work schedule, and your budget.
Cruises are not the only ways to take advantage of last minute travel deals. Sometimes airlines will do the same thing in order to book the last few seats on a plane. Of course, once again you have to watch websites, and pay attention to catch, and take advantage of such deals.
Usually you can save anywhere from 15-30%, and sometimes even significantly more if you can book your travel last minute. This means if you have flexibility. If you are set on a certain destination, and a specific day, booking last minute will not save you money, rather it will cost you money. You will be paying a premium for not booking in advance. However, if you do not really care where you go, or when you leave, you can typically get some great rates, and thus save hundreds of dollars on your vacation that can be put toward your cash reserve instead.
The same holds true for activities. If you are in a popular destination, and there is an activity you want to do, you can sometimes take a spot of someone who cancelled last minute, or fill a spot in an almost sold out event, and get your activity for less because of it.
In order to take advantage of such deals, be sure to talk to a travel agent, and have them on the look out for you. Have flexibility in your work. Have flexibility in your destination.
