Unconventional investments
Question:
I've been hearing about a lot of different types of alternative type investments lately and have some questions about them. I know that the stock market is the traditional investment, but I just can't seem to form any desire to invest in stocks. What other types of investments can I consider to help develop my portfolio and to make the most of my investment dollars?

Answer:
Investing has been confusing people for many, many years and not much has changed in that respect. There are so many different types of investments and investing can be approached from almost every angle you can think of. But there are still many questions that can be answered about investing and there are lots of options out there for the investor who wants to do more than just invest in stocks and mutual funds.
One important thing to remember about stock investing is that it isn't always so conventional and that there are plenty of alternative types of stocks in the market that you may not see without digging a little deeper. These types of stocks may have similar risks and payoffs as run of the mill or average investments in the stock market, but they can be more entertaining and also more interesting to follow. If you want to get a break from the average stock market fund, then you should dig a little deeper and look at some of the more aggressive and alternative types of stocks out there. In addition to stocks, there are also alternative types of securities that can be traded. They may include bonds released by the government or companies and other exotic investments. Foreign exchange trading, also known as FOREX trading, has become more popular in recent years and many top investors are sure to always include some FOREX trading in their portfolios. These investments can often be complex and difficult to understand if you don't know much about the country you are dealing with. But the rewards of these alternative investments are potentially very high and can really improve your ability to earn money.
Real estate is also something that many people are hearing about right now. But most articles are talking about why real estate is a bad thing to invest in right now especially in some very weak markets where foreclosure rates are very high. But this excites many other investors who realize that foreclosures may be the best price they can get on a home in a very long time and they are jumping the opportunity. The real estate crisis has made it so that many people are not able to afford a home of their own and this can create a great opportunity to provide rental properties. Flipping used to be the hot word in real estate, but many investors are shying away from flipping now in favor of a buy and hold strategy and renting the homes to that expanding market.
Another very worthwhile investment that you could also consider is investing in a business of some kind. Many people want to start their own business and have a vision of being free from the rules and hours of someone else. You can start your own business or join a group that buys into ideas businesses have and support them so they can make money and you can earn interest in the investment you put in to the business. This can also be a challenging arena, but there is also a certain degree of satisfaction and personality that comes from dealing directly with a company and helping them get underway or evolve in a good way to promote their business.
