Understanding your financial picture

One of the reasons many people are not doing as well financially as they would like is because they do not have a clear financial picture, or do not understand what they see. For example, they may be able to pay their bills and enjoy life each month, but are never progressing. Their savings is not growing, their assets are not growing, and they are not really getting any better off. What does this really mean?

Learning to understand your financial picture and what it means today, tomorrow, and five years from now is key to getting to the point of financial freedom, where you can enjoy your wealth, and not work so hard to have things you want.
The following questions will help you to better understand your financial picture:
Are you getting out of debt, or deeper into debt? If you are getting deeper into debt instead of getting out of it then there are some changes you need to make. You need to adjust your spending, curb your expenditures, and stick to a budget. In addition to that you need to evaluate what is causing you to over-spend. Are you being too emotional with your money? Are your debts too great? What can you change to get yourself out of debt?
Are you able to meet your monthly financial obligations without great difficulty? If you are struggling to make ends meet then you need to make some adjustments to your situation. Do you need to downsize your home? Do you need to work more? When people have trouble meeting their monthly financial obligations they have usually gotten into a pattern of over spending that has led to difficulty. Break the cycle and over come the difficulty.
Are you saving for the future? You will not get better off financially if you do not start to save for the future now. What kind of savings plan do you have in place? Are you saving for education for your children? Are you saving for retirement? Do you have an emergency fund?
Do you have investments? Investing is how you grow wealth. You can't possibly work enough to earn wealth, even if you make a good salary. The way to get true wealth, and wealth that lasts is to have your money earn. It won't matter how many hours are in the day, etc. if your money is the earner not you.
Do you have a plan for retirement? If you don't, get one. How will you live when you are unable to work anymore. What you get from social security is not going to be enough.
Are you preparing for future expenses like college for your kids? To have a clear understanding of your financial picture you have to think forward, not just in today. So, plan for the big expenses that will occur in your life, weddings, deaths, births, education, etc.
