There are all kinds of different ways that people use to keep their finances straight. While some choose not to do anything and to deal with bounced checks and insufficient fund notices when they occur, there are others who would prefer to have a better grip on their finances and actually know how much money they have and where it is going. There is no right method for keeping your finances straight, only a method that you find works best for you. Below are some commonly used strategies for keeping your finances straight that you may consider trying. Remember that if you try something that you just don't' feel that you can stick to, switch strategies. Finding a way to keep your finances straight that works for you is worth the effort.

Check registers

Check registers are easy to understand and usually free for the taking from your local credit union or bank (wherever you happen to have your checking account). While getting and using check registers is easy enough, taking the time to do so every time that you write a check is another story. Many times check registers only work when you record the expense that you had at the checkout counter. Many check registry users find that the registry entry never gets written, amounts cannot be remembered, or it is just too much of a hassle to add entries after the fact. This means that there will be times when adding to check registers means holding up the line wherever you are writing your check. For some the alternatives to check registers do not work or they simply do not care that it takes a couple extra seconds to add to the registry. If check registries work for you and you are not intimidated by remembering to use yours all the time then this is a great way to keep your finances straight. If registries are not for you consider these alternatives.

Software

If you want a computer program to do your finance straightening for you there are several options to consider. There are software programs that you can purchase and add all of the information into by yourself by keeping receipts. These programs can help you to keep track of your finances over the course of a long period of time without the clutter and disorganization of paper. Graphs and charts are often used to show you exactly what percentage of your money is spent where. If internet banking is something that you are interested in trying, financial software just got a whole lot easier. If you do all of your banking online, you can actually use a program that downloads that banking information and loads it into the computer with only a few key strokes. Using software to help keep your finances straight is a great idea if you are confident with your computer skills and trust in the security if your online financial information.

Notepad

There are those that feel like conventional money tracking methods are confusing and they do not like to conform to someone else's techniques when it comes to keeping their own finances straight. If you are looking to discover a method that works best for you, consider carrying around or keeping a small notebook in your car. All that you need to do is write down where you spent money and how much you spent. If you want to add more information such as the date go ahead and do so. It is entirely up to you. You record what you are most interested in analyzing and organize your gathered information in the way that best suits you.
