Using Google advertising when starting your own business

When starting your own business, advertising is one of the things you will constantly be working on. Advertising is crucial for getting the word about your business out, especially in the beginning.

One form of advertising many people have turned to is Google. Google AdWords is one form of advertising that can be very helpful for small businesses.

What is Google AdWords?
Google AdWords is a type of pay-per-click search engine. This advertising method, also called a click through, is a type of web search marketing. Business owners put an ad online and pay a set amount of money for each time their ad is clicked. Advertisers can create their own ads and select their own search words, optimizing their chances for success.

For example, let's say you advertise with Google Adwords by placing a banner ad. You are then charged a certain amount for every time a person clicks on that ad, which takes them to your website, or promotion.

Because it can get expensive with all the clicks you may receive, Google Adwords allows you to set a monthly limit to the amount of money you want to spend. Once this limit is reached, your ad goes offline and you are no longer charged. This is convenient because you don't have to worry about going over your advertising budget.

How to use Google advertising
This type of advertising is competitive, and it can be difficult to draw in your target audience if you don't know what you're doing.

The following are some tips for making the most of Google advertising with your small business:

Choose the right keywords
Your ads will display based on the keywords you select. The keywords are the search terms you choose to go along with your AdWords ad. However, your competition in this area is pretty fierce. For example, if you put in key words in a search engine, you may see something that says, "Results 1-10 of 3,000,000." In order to make your ads stand out and increase your chances of drawing more traffic, you will need to choose effective key words.

Google's Keyword Help, as well as the Key Word Selection tool, will help you get started with this. It's also a good idea to think like your customer; for example, if you are advertising your dog training business, you have customers who will be searching for training, curbing unwanted behaviors, and so forth.

Target your ad
You should also target your ad to appear in the places your business operates. So if you only operate your business in one city or state, make sure you set your ad to appear locally. Google's Localization Tool will help you with this.

Make the most of your ads
Because you have such limited space for the actual ad that will appear based on the key words you select, you should make sure you write compelling ads that will attract your customers and encourage them to click through. You have just 25 characters for the ad's headline, 70 characters for the actual text of the ad, and 35 characters for the display URL.

You can make the most of your Google adwords ad by researching how to write effective ads. You should also avoid common ads that, to the smart consumer, will only look like a scam. Ads like, "Click here for a free 50-inch plasma TV!" will turn off smart consumers, so make your ad compelling but not too good to be true.
