Online banking is growing in popularity. The convenience of being able to handle your finances from the comfort of you own home at any time of the day or night that you please definitely has appeal. Yet there are critics of online banking that see it as dangerous or impersonal and prefer the more traditional methods. If you are having a difficult time deciding whether or not online banking is for you, or you would simply like to know more about online banking and its pros and cons, take a minute to read the following lists:

Pros to using online banking

  • Convenience/accessibility - For many the convenience and accessibility that online banking provides far outweighs any disadvantages that exist. With people becoming more and more busy, it is simply impossible for some to make it into their local bank branch to juggle their finances during business hours. For others it is less a matter of not being able to get to the bank and more a matter of not having to when such simple transactions can just be done at home. With your banking at your finger tips you can see instantly whether or not a check has cleared, what your balances are, what the history of every account that you have is, and the list goes on!
  • Additional financial resources - Many online banking programs can be synched with budgeting software. This means that with minimal effort on your part you can create detailed budgets of your spending. This means eliminating a lot of the time that you would have otherwise spent doing things like balancing a checkbook, saving and counting receipts, etc.

Cons to using online banking

  • Security/privacy - The internet is still a scary place for many people and the thought of having your banking information out there in cyberspace is certainly enough to deter any skeptics of internet safety. While hackers are getting smarter and identity theft is becoming more and more of a problem, even new security and privacy technology is still not enough to convince some that their banking information is safe when it is able to be accessed online.
  • Possible discrepancies - When you use online banking there is always the possibility that there could be discrepancies between what is done online and what registers at your local branch. If there is an error in the online information that you see, chances are that you will have to call or show up in person at your bank in order to solve a problem.
  • Some transactions must still be done in person - The systems are not perfect and there will be times when a signature or proof of identification will be needed and a personal visit to the bank will be required anyway. Large transactions or transferring of important documents will most likely require a personal appearance at your bank.
  • Confidence with technical abilities - Those who are not confident in their abilities to work on the computer or to navigate a website will definitely feel some anxiety about trusting their financial information to a faceless and voiceless internet site. As there are still millions of working and able adults that do not know how to use the computer, chances are that internet banking will remain something that people are hesitant to do for a while yet.

Online banking is not for everyone and thus you will continue to see more and more financial establishments build new office buildings and offer more and better services to their customers who prefer a more personal approach to their banking. Yet it is undeniable that internet banking will also grow in popularity and that those who now feel that the cons are too great to do their banking online just might change their minds in the future.
