Vacations that are the Cheapest

While travel is fun in today's economy it can be costly. Trimming your travel costs does not mean that you have to eliminate the fun. Creative travel can give you a vacation to remember while putting dollars in your pocket.

  • Start at home- Have you seen where you live? Sometimes the best vacations can begin at home. Staying at home and exploring the local attractions can save you big on travel costs. While flights can vary widely for a family of four the savings can range from the 100's to 1000's of dollars. In addition the price of gas has made car travel that much more expensive as well. Best of all staying at home means you get to stay in the comfort of your own home! No packing, no unpacking and no weird hotels to worry about. So right from the start you are saving big bucks on your vacation. Then start to explore the attractions right in your own back yard. Many museums, ski resorts and other venues offer locals only discounts that can save you up to 50% and sometimes may even be free if you live in a certain zip code. You can go online to find coupons and discounts that will allow you to treat your family to something special everyday of your vacation. And don't forget the food! Since you are saving so much money by staying at home you can try out those special new restaurants without worrying that you are blowing your vacation budget. Like many other venues some restaurants offer locals only specials or coupons that will deeply discount your dining experience. While it may not be exotic you save yourself stress, hassle and most importantly big money by staying at home for your next vacation.
  • Go for an all inclusive vacation- Many travelers may want to shy away from all-inclusive vacations because of the undeserved reputation of having bad food and cheap entertainment. But today's all inclusive (both on land and cruises) offer a discounted vacation experience that saves you money without sacrificing fun or flavor. Best of all you can budget since you know upfront how much your vacation will cost you. While travel experts always recommend reading the fine print an all-inclusive vacation generally provides lodging, entertainment and food with alcohol and touring (or shore) excursions costing extra. Cruises are another exceptional value that can save you big money. A recent publication put the cost of a Mediterranean cruise at about $6000 dollars versus the same cost on land of about $11,000 dollars-a savings of almost 50%.
  • Travel to cheaper places and countries- While the lure of Italy and Spain can be great a visit to nearby Greece and Portugal can be cheaper and full of charm. While Jamaica and Grand Cayman are beautiful you can see the same beauty much cheaper on the islands of U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic. Best of all you may beat the hordes of tourist that clog the more popular sites. Since vacationing is really about less stress choosing somewhere a little off the beaten path can provide you with a huge costs savings as well as less hassle.
  • Plan ahead- A general rule of travel is this-no matter where you go the cheapest vacations are the ones you plan ahead. Too often when we do not plan then we are stuck paying for a hotel, service or dining experience that we did not anticipate. If you are willing to put in the hours to plan ahead you will know when is the right time to travel (travel experts say traveling off-peak can save you at least 50%) where is right place for you to travel and how is the cheapest way for you to get there. All of these ways can save you big money that you can then pocket after your vacation is over!
