What to do when you have a big purchase decision to make
When you have a big purchase decision to make, it is wise to not just jump into something or buy the first whatever that comes along. There are some steps that you can take to ensure you purchase the right things at the right price. So, the following are some of the things you should be doing each time you have a big purchase decision to make:
Ask yourself if you need it: If you are going to be spending a lot of money on something, you should probably determine if you need that something, or if your money could be better spent. If you have plenty of extra money, no debt to speak of, and a healthy income coming in, then the real question is just how to get the best deal. But, if you are not as fortunate, it is wise to determine the true need versus want value of the item. For example, if finances are tight, but you need a car, do you need something economical or an SUV? These are the kinds of questions you should ask yourself. So, decide how important purchasing this item is, and if there is a less expensive item that could fit the need.

Comparison shop: Once you have determined your need of the item, it is important to recognize that not all things are created equal. So, let's go back to our previous example of the car. You need to comparison shop the cars you are thinking about getting. Look at what you need, four doors, AC, a stereo, tinted windows, low mileage, or whatever it may be, then look around. Use the internet, visit several lots, see what the normal price is, and what it is you are paying for. Compare same model and year vehicles to see if you can a good price. You want to see what the prices are on items of similar quality and value.
Sit on it a few days: Whenever you are making a big purchase decision it is smart to sit on it a few days. Meaning, take a few days to think it through and really decide if it is something you want, if you really want to get it now, and if you are willing and able to pay that price for the item. So, find the item you want, and put it on hold, or make sure the price will still be good in a few days, then think about it for a while. Usually a few days will give you all the clarity you need for making a great decision as far as making the purchase.
Ask about sales, promotions, coupons, etc.: When you make a big purchase decision it is important to know if you can save any money. No one likes to buy something just to find out a few days later that it went on sale for a holiday or some random promotion etc. So, ask them if there will be any sales, promotions, coupons, etc. coming up.
Look for ways to save: Find out if there are other ways to save money on this purchase. For example, maybe you can buy it with a credit card that offers a percentage back.
Find out about warranties, guarantees, etc: When you buy something big, you do not want to have to pay for it when it breaks, or replace it when it goes bad can be too pricey. So, look into warranty options and have fun with the peace of mind that comes with warranties.
If you can do these things not only will you be sure to not overspend on these big price items, but you will also have the peace of mind that you have a good deal, good quality, and everything else you need.
