Heating and cooling costs can get very high, especially when times are tough and energy costs are at record highs. Having a timer and using the energy you do more efficiently will cut costs and also help you know that you are doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint. Getting a programmable thermostat will help you cut costs in more ways than one.

Many people don't realize how much energy they are using when they don't even need it. If you want to really understand how much energy you are saving, you can keep track of the time you are actually in the house during a particular month and then divide the total utility bill by the amount of hours in the period. Multiply the number of hours you were out of the house by the hourly cost of the energy used and you will see how much you could really be saving if you were just to pay more attention to what energy you used at all times of the day.

Lots of people think that a programmable thermostat is very expensive or difficult to install, or that it can't be used on their furnace or air conditioning unit. But they are actually quite reasonable in price, easy to install and are normally compatible with all different kinds of heating and cooling systems with only a few exceptions. If you aren't sure whether a programmable thermostat is right for you, you can just take a trip to your local home store and see ask what the options are for your home and your situation.

People also don't realize how much money they are seeing seep out of their home when they really don't notice it anyway. During a cold winter, most people have their heaters on all through the night and don't really even need it to be the same temperature during the day and night. Having a programmable thermostat helps you forget about how often the heater is running and still get the same benefits.

Most programmable thermostats allow you to set a program that is executed each day. Many even have a weekend and weekday setting to adapt to the different needs you have on different days. Many people are out of the home most of the week and don't need the home cooled or heated while they are gone. As a general rule, it is a good idea to set the temperature during the daylight hours when you are home to a comfortable temperature and then set the night temperature a few degrees lower or higher, depending on whether it is summer or winter. During the times in between the seasons, you should even consider leaving off the thermostat in the dawn and dusk hours and opening a window to save even more on utilities.

A programmable thermostat is one of the most money smart upgrades you can make in your home to save energy. They are relatively inexpensive compared to other upgrades. Most only cost $100-200 depending on the features they have and the cost savings can be made up in only a year or two depending on how much energy you use. Getting used to the system can be difficult at first, but you will realize how much money you are saving and this will help you to stay motivated by the savings. Programmable thermostats help you make more decisions about what temperature you actually want the home to be a t different times of the day. So take some time to do research and find out how much it would cost you to put in a programmable thermostat and to start reducing your energy costs right away.
