Why Stay Home More Often

One of the easiest ways cut your entertainment cost is to stay in more often. But before you think you have to give up all your fun here are some great ways to entertain yourself at home and save money-

  • Eating at home- This area of entertainment alone can save you big bucks. While a night out at a moderately priced restaurant can run $40 (without alcohol or tip) you can stay in and eat great for a fraction of the costs. Here are some cost-cutting ways to save money by eating at home-
    1. If you regularly go and eat out twice a week try cooking at home at least one of those nights. Replacing your pizza night out with making it at home can save you at least 50% of what you would spend. And you do not have to be a gourmet cook, doing some online research can show you some easy and affordable meals to make at home. Costs savings for two could be as much as $20 per week.
    2. Have friends over for a potluck. While you and your friends may enjoy those nights out in a trendy restaurant they can come at a steep price. Many people report spending $30-40 dollars in drinks and appetizers when out with friends. Try having your gang over for a potluck. Assign dishes (or let your friends be creative) and you can provide drinks, dessert or just dishes whatever fits your budget. Remember the key is to enjoy being together. Cost savings per person can be as much as $20-30 dollars.
    3. Try the takeout. If you just cannot resist having restaurant food many places now offer a special takeout restaurant. While this may not save you much in total food costs just remember no tip, less temptation to add on extras (saving on your waistline as well) and no paying a sitter if you have kids. Total savings anywhere from 10-30% less than eating in the restaurant.
  • Other entertainment costs- From seeing movies, to attending sporting events or concerts going out can costs big money. Try the following ideas for some fun at home and pocket the money you would have spent.
    1. Break out the games. Gather your family and friends for a fun game night in. Whether its cards, board games or one of the versions of Charades you can have an affordable night in with no limit to the fun. Remember the bigger the group the more fun and competitive it can be. Since virtually everyone has games in the back of the closet there is no need to go out and buy anything just have everyone bring their favorite game over to play. And best of all total cost-nothing!
    2. Take up a hobby- While hobbies do cost money they still tend to be cheaper than simply going out. Gardening, scrap booking even exercising from home (just think of it you can do yoga and not be embarrassed!) can be a cost effective way to entertain yourself. While a night out is certainly fun gardening, home improvement or crafts can leave you with a lasting legacy and improve the value of your home. Total costs savings-dependent on the hobby that you choose.
    3. Utilize your electronics-Instead of heading off to an expensive lecture or concert why not check and see if you can see it online? Most people today consider having the internet an essential expense so why not use it to help you cut your entertainment costs as well? Many pod casts and re-broadcasts are available online and best of all you watch them all from the comfort of your home with even no need to get dressed up! Total cost savings-$25 on up for ticket prices, gas to travel to venue, food and sitter costs if applicable.
