Avoiding upset stomachs when you travel

Let's face it, while travel can be very exciting, sometimes it can be hard on the body, especially if you travel somewhere foreign. One of the top fears people have when they go to a foreign country is whether or not the food will be safe to eat or if it will make them sick. People worry about poor food hygiene and contaminated water. And, these fears are real, and should be addressed. So, rather than worry or suffer the consequences, you should prepare yourself for all possibilities so no bad affects can harm you. Try the following:

First and foremost, if you are smart about things, you can avoid the main causes of illnesses by trying to stay away from eating raw or undercooked meat, and be cautious of seafood. It is also important to be wary of unpasteurized dairy. Many places do not pasteurize dairy products, so avoid dairy and you probably won't have a problem. Of course wash any fresh foods well before eating them, even if you are at a restaurant.

If you have a really sensitive stomach, or you are really worried about your stomach while traveling, then eat only packaged foods, and drink only bottled water. These are usually safe. Also, thoroughly cooked foods are going to be safe for you.

Protect yourself from weird stomach problems by being careful to buy in stores not from street vendors. Most stores have standards of quality that have to be met, whereas street vendors do not have any qualifications to meet.

Generally, alcoholic beverages, carbonated soft drinks, and properly boiled teas and coffees should be safe.

Obviously these are all generalities. Hygiene and food preparation varies from country to country, and even city to city. So, one of the best things you can do is a little research. You will want to go online and see what others who have visited that place have to say, this can be done by reading blogs, or looking at traveler reports, etc. This is smart. You are going to hear all the dirt when you go to a blog because these are people who have been there and have nothing to lose or gain by telling you about their experience.

If you want to avoid an upset stomach when you travel, stay in a good hotel. If you stay in a high class hotel, you will probably be safe to drink the water because most hotels exercise caution with their water and have appropriate filtering systems in place.

Use bottled water when you brush your teeth. A lot of people are really careful about what they drink, but they are not careful with all water. So, brush with bottled water, and use anti-bacterial wipes, etc. to wash your hands. Of course this brings us to the next point, be sure to wash your hands frequently.

Believe it or not, sometimes it is the cleaning agents that can make you sick. If you are not used to the purifying agents and chemicals used by other countries, even bottled water could make you sick. Over a long period of use the body can acclimatize to it quite easily, so if you want to make sure you are not sick while on vacation, take along a water filter system that you are used to. For example, take along a Brita pitcher.

One thing some people do not understand is that some of the vaccinations they take to protect themselves when on vacation can actually make them sick, nauseated, etc. So, talk to your doctor so you know whether or not you may get sick, and what to do if you do.

Stomach cramps and nausea can really make even the most wonderful of vacations not very fun. So, take the above precautions and protect yourself from upset stomach when you travel.
