Hatha yoga is a form of exercise that has been practiced for centuries and was originally designed as a means for people to achieve spiritual perfection through physically perfecting their bodies. However, many people today use hatha yoga not for religious purposes, but because of the many benefits it provides.

Physical benefits
Yoga has increased in popularity in recent years as a result of the physical benefits it brings to the body by doing various postures, or stretching positions. As a result, hatha yoga has provided the following benefits for those who practice it regularly:

  • Improves flexibility

  • Strengthens and tones muscles

  • Helps to improve certain muscular-skeletal conditions, such as bad knees or sore back

  • Improves balance and posture

  • Increases circulation throughout the body

  • Alleviates pain associated with arthritis in some practitioners

  • Helps improve breathing disorders or difficulties

  • Relieves muscle strain

Many people use yoga as a means of weight loss; however, generally speaking hatha yoga isn't enough to help lose and sustain weight loss, as it typically doesn't increase the heart rate for a prolonged period of time, which is required for sustained weight loss.

However, even though it is not aerobic exercise in itself (some forms of yoga are very demanding, and yoga classes in gym often combine aerobic moves), it still can help you improve the look of your body by toning and tightening the muscles.

Many people who have desk jobs or spend hours each day sitting have found hatha yoga to be especially beneficial. Stretching and holding certain poses in hatha yoga can help alleviate the physical discomfort associated with sitting for long periods.

Mental benefits
When they hear the word "yoga," many people picture a group of people sitting cross legged and doing deep-breathing exercises. Hatha yoga is an excellent way to relieve stress and clear the mind, making the mental benefits just as numerous and important as the physical benefits. Some of the mental benefits you can expect from hatha yoga include:

  • Relaxes the body and mind

  • Helps teach concentration and relaxation techniques

  • Increases body awareness

  • Relieves chronic stress patterns in the mind and body

  • Teaches how to meditate

Hatha yoga is a complete exercise because not only does it focus on the body and the physical benefits, but it is an exercise for the mind as well. Many people enjoy the relaxation, breathing, and stress-reducing benefits that hatha yoga provides them

Age-related benefits
Another benefit of hatha yoga is that it is an excellent exercise for people of all ages. Children can benefit from the discipline taught in yoga, as well as the benefits it provides by helping them to maintain their natural flexibility while instilling the importance of proper posture.

Senior citizens can benefit from hatha yoga as well, as it can improve circulation, sore joints and muscles, and help keep muscles strong as well.

Women of any age who are pregnant also benefit from yoga as well. It helps to relieve the swelling and back pain associated with pregnancy. Many women who practice yoga throughout their pregnancy find that their labor is shorter and easier. In addition, the breathing and focusing techniques taught help them during labor as well.

Hatha yoga is a form of yoga that can provide a number of life long benefits, both physical and mental, for people of all ages.
