What are the best exercises to build you calf muscles? Well, there are several, but first let's look at why they aren't increasing in size with what you are already doing. There may be several reasons your calf muscles aren't increasing in size or strength. One reason may be your workout routine needs to be changed.

You can change your workout in a number of different ways just by adding exercises or increasing the intensity of exercises in your workout.

Another reason may be neglect. You may be focusing most of your workout on other more "showy" muscles such as your arm and chest muscles taking away muscle training from your calves. Sure you perform some calf exercises but be honest are you spending much more training on that "favorite" area you have rather than on your calves? Lets face it calf exercises are boring and for some even painful. In your workout routine it is ok to have one area that you favor or a problem area that you spend a little more time training-but only a little time. Your workout should exercise all major muscle groups evenly.

Genetics may also play a small role in building your calf muscles. Genetics may be a factor out of your control but there are many factors that you do control such as how hard you train, how much time you spend training, how you plan your workouts and keeping a positive mental attitude. You need to have drive, commitment, 100% determination and focus to build and strengthen all your body muscles.

When performing calf exercises it is best to be bare foot or wear slippers some thing that is soft on your feet, not giving your arch much support, making these exercises more productive.

Standing calf raise: Step up on the foot block of the machine you are using. Put your head between the shoulder pads. Your shoulders should be comfortably positioned under the pads. Place the balls of your feet, with your feet shoulder length apart on the foot block, your toes facing forward. Straighten your legs and use your shoulders to support the weight. Keep your knees straight during the entire movement. Lower your heels slowly until your calf muscles are stretched down as far as possible. Hold this position for a second and then rise up as high as you can on the tips of your toes. Hold this position for a second. Repeat.

Seated calf raises also are great for building calf muscles. Adjust the knee pads of the machine so that you are able to sit with your knees snug to the pads. Put the balls of your feet on the foot block, toes pointed forward and your feet place shoulder length apart. Rise up as high as you can on the tips of your toes. Hold this position for a second. Lower your heels slowly until your calf muscles stretch down as far as possible. Hold this position for a second. Repeat. If you do not have access to a seated calf machine you can do this exercise seated on the end of a bench with a barbell wrapped in a towel placed on top of your knees.

Leg calf raise: Stand on one leg with the ball of your foot on a calf block and your heels hanging off the edge of the block. Keep your balance by holding onto something such as a squat rack. Keep your knee straight during this entire movement. Lower your heel slowly until the calf muscle stretches down as far as possible. Hold the position for a second. The rise up as high as you can on the tips of your toes. Hold this position for a second. Repeat the desired number of reps then repeat using the other leg. To add more resistance to this exercise you can hold a dumbbell or do this exercise in a standing calf raise machine. This is a good warm up exercise or as a finishing exercise in your calf training.
