With summer right around the corner, the quest for a slim, flat stomach is in full gear. For many people, the belly is a problem area, and extra weight that accumulates there is some of the most difficult to lose.

Running effectively burns fat all over the body, including around the belly, by getting the heart rate up quickly and burning a higher number of calories than many other exercises. If you take up running, it's important to invest in a good pair of running shoes. Many of the injuries associated with running can be remedied or prevented with a well-fitting pair of running shoes.
  • Swimming. Another excellent form of cardiovascular exercise for losing weight is swimming. This full-body workout will also tone all of your muscles while reducing the fat content in your belly. Swimming is good for those with joint problems, as there is no impact, or those who don't like to sweat while they work out.
  • Bicycling. Biking is a good cardio exercise, particularly for people whose joints aren't up for running or other high impact exercises. This exercise works to burn fat throughout the body while toning the legs as well. Exercise bikes are particularly helpful for toning the lower body, as the intensity and level of resistance can be adjusted accordingly, providing a more challenging workout.
  • Walking. Walking is a wonderful exercise because free, it's easy on the joints, and all it requires is a good pair of comfortable walking shoes. Walking is a great exercise for beginning exercisers who want to lose belly fat. For better results in losing belly fat, it's important to make sure you're actually walking fast enough to get your heart rate up, not just taking a stroll.


Ab exercises

You can't spot reduce belly fat by doing ab exercises alone, but they are important for developing a toned and trim midsection. You need only train your abs twice a week for maximum results. The following are some of the best exercises for toning up the belly:

  • Crunches
  • Crunches on a stability ball
  • Hanging knee lifts
  • Pulleys
