There are many reasons people gain a double chin. It could be from excess weight, or it could be from aging or a genetic predisposition and your face shape. If the latter is the case, there isn't much you can do about your double chin short of surgery. However, if you have a double chin because you are carrying a little extra weight on the body, there are a number of things you can do to eliminate it.

The best way to lose fat from the body, including the double chin, is through a combination of healthy eating and exercise. The best exercises for losing fat are high-intensity cardio exercises that can help you lose fat all over the body, including your double chin. Cardio exercises get the heart rate elevated for a prolonged period of time (a minimum of 30 minutes 5 times a week is recommended).

In addition to cardio, you can also do exercises targeted to build muscles in the area, such as opening your mouth very wide and pushing your lower jaw forward and then up again, so your bottom teeth extend over the top of your upper lip. The effectiveness of this exercise is not scientifically proven, but some people seem to have success with it. If you choose to do this exercise, do this 10-15 times, 3-4 times a day.

For losing the fat in the double chin, the following are the best exercises for you to lose fat quickly. It should not take long to see results, as fat around the face and chin are some of the first places for it to go.

  • Running/jogging. Running or jogging is one of the best exercises best for losing weight. Running effectively burns fat all over the body by elevating the heart rate quickly burning a higher number of calories than many other exercises, so you'll lose your double chin quickly. Make sure to invest in a good pair of running shoes.
  • Swimming. Another excellent form of cardiovascular exercise for losing weight (and your double chin!) is swimming. This full-body workout will also tone your muscles while reducing the fat content in your body. Swimming is good for those with joint problems, as there is no impact, or those who don't like to sweat while they work out.
  • Bicycling. Biking is a good cardio exercise, particularly for people whose joints aren't up for running or other high impact exercises. This exercise works to burn fat throughout the body while toning the legs as well. Exercise bikes are particularly helpful for toning the lower body, as the intensity and level of resistance can be adjusted accordingly, providing a more challenging workout.
  • Stair climbing. If you have access to one, the StairMaster, or similar machines, are great for both toning the butt while trimming fat from it at the same time. For best results, don't hang on the handles while you climb. You can also take up step aerobics. This form of aerobics was invented in the 80s and is still popular because it is so effective in toning not just the butt, but the entire lower half of the body as well. If you don't have a gym membership, you can run up and down stairs, which will provide you with an equally effective workout.
