Loosing weight can be a difficult thing to do by yourself. When there is no one there to see you take that extra piece of chocolate cake or eat those cheesy fries it is easy to cheat on your diet. Many people who have had such self-motivation challenges in the past turn to some sort of group or forum for weight loss support. These weight loss groups are not only designed as a check system to ensure that you stay on track but also as an opportunity to receive personalized help from a group of individuals who are going through the same situation as you. The best groups and forums are led by professionals or dieticians who can provide even more helpful advice to ensure that your dieting experience ends in success.

Of course there are many different groups and forums available, mostly because anyone can start a group or forum. In this article we will focus on the two most popular types of groups and forums. They are the kinds of groups that have meetings that you physically attend and online forums and groups where counseling is provided via internet chats and email.

The most popular form of group that you can physically attend at various meeting site is the Weight Watchers Plan. The Weight Watchers diet program not only provides you with tools to start and carry out a successful diet, but they also hold regular meetings at their many offices around the country. The Weight Watchers plan has a credo of "you bit it your write it" this means that everything you eat is to be documented in order to encourage personal accountability and awareness of possible problems and points of improvement in your diet. Weight Watchers also holds weekly meetings that are held by a Weight Watchers leader and usually last less than an hour. At these meetings are confidential weigh-ins that are designed to track your progress. The leader and group share tips, recipes, and help guide you through the program. Weigh-ins may be uncomfortable for some people but they are meant to serve as motivation to stick to your diet. The idea is that you can't keep any secrets, everything you eat is recorded and weight Watchers leaders are keeping track of how your weight is changing. By having a group on your side it becomes much easier to stick to your diet.

Online forums and groups are becoming more and more popular. Online groups provide you with an opportunity to receive support with your diet without putting yourself in the uncomfortable situation of being weighed or judged by others. Anyone can start an online group or forum so it is important to join a group ran by a reputable name like Jenny Craig or Good Housekeeping. Weight Watchers also provides online message boards for mutual support. Those uncomfortable with meetings may prefer to weigh-in and leave, or to use the Weight Watchers Online program instead. Weight loss forums offer a great deal of diversity in the support options available. For example, there can be forums for any number of dieting types such as:

  • A new dieter's forum for those just starting on their diet.
  • A weekly weigh-in forum to have you be held accountable for your weight loss and encouraged in your successes and short comings.
  • Ask a professional for personal help.
  • Forums where you can keep a personal progress journal.
  • Forums that you can form by adding "buddies" or people that you would like in your circle of support.
  • Food and recipes forums are helpful ways to get healthy recipes and food tips.
  • Exercise forums can provide helpful hints that have worked for others trying to loose weight just like you.
