Anyone who works away from home knows that using your sick days can cost money. During the winter seasons it is becoming increasingly more difficult to stay healthy, and you are forced into using those sick days to recover from being sick. So how can you cut down your sick time at work by staying healthy? Living a healthy life can benefit you in more than one way.

Nutrition and exercise play an important role in how your immune system functions. With the right knowledge you can use them both to your advantage and live a healthier life with less sick days. Insufficiency with one or more of the essential nutrients can prevent the immune system from working properly. Your immune system consists of many cells that help protect your body from bacteria, viruses, and other harmful organisms. When your immune system is compromised by lack of nutrients, exercise or sleep it isn't strong enough to fight off the bad germs which make you sick. So how can we cut down your sick time at work by staying healthy? Here are some helpful suggestions.

Start by eating a well balanced diet. This may be hard if you work full time are constantly on the go, but maintaining a well balanced diet can help you stay healthy and boost your immune system; which means less sick days for you. Make sure that you fill your plate with fruits and vegetables. Certain vitamins and phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables serve as antioxidants that help your immune system function properly. They make sure that just in case your body is threatened with a virus, that it is killed before it causes too much harm. Getting your recommended "five-a-day" of fruits and vegetables can help you fight off a cold and stay healthy. Your plate should be two thirds filled with vegetables or fruit and one third with protein. You should also be eating at least two different colors of vegetables with each meal.

  • As mentioned already protein is a vital part of a healthy diet; in moderation of course. Protein helps your body manufacture more white blood cells which help fight against antigens. Protein also has amino acids which can help with building all of the body's cells. It is recommended that you should eat one gram of protein per kilogram of your body weight and that it should be lean protein. Some examples of lean protein might be seafood, eggs, beans, and soy products.
  • A regular workout schedule is also another way to keep your body healthy and strong and help keep you in the office instead of out. It has been statistically proven that individuals who are on a regular work out schedule are healthier and miss fewer days at work than those who do not. Regular exercise keeps the blood circulating in your body and helps boost your immune system. And it also helps with a healthy active mind. Part of living a healthy life is making sure that your body is functioning physically and mentally. Exercise is known to reduce stress and depression which is also essential to a healthy body.
  • Getting enough rest will also help cut down on your sick time and keep you healthy. If you're not getting sufficient hours of sleep at night your body doesn't have enough time to rejuvenate itself and gets worn out. It becomes more susceptible to viruses and bacterial germs. Make sure your are getting the amount of sleep that your body needs; not too much and not too little. You know your body best so you be the judge.

Cutting down your sick time at work by staying healthy isn't as hard as it might seem. Plenty of fluids, a well balanced diet, and enough rest will keep you in the office and out of bed.
