Dealing with breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women. It is this high probability that many women fear. More and more women are being touched personally by this cancer. Messages about breast cancer are almost everywhere you look. Free screening services are on the rise. Being surrounded by so many reminders of this disease is definitely distressing. Perhaps you are worried that you have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. Maybe there is a family history of cancer. Maybe your role in dealing with breast cancer is to help someone that you love with their fight against the cancer.


Being diagnosed is another stress all together. After being diagnosed with a disease or with cancer, one has a number of different things go through their minds. Many thoughts turn towards the future and what may happen then. It may give you comfort to know that if there were ever a time to be diagnosed with breast cancer, your chances of survival today are much better than they have been in years past. There are many new and effective treatment options that have an impressive history of success. Going through cancer is a challenge.

Only those who have experienced the ordeal can truly understand all that is involved with the healing process. You should know that it is perfectly normal to be afraid. There will be times when you will feel the need to put on a happy face and other times when it will be very hard to deal with everything that you are carrying on your shoulders. Along with fear, there are many other emotions related to breast cancer that you will need to deal with. There are emotions such as anxiety, uncertainty, feeling out of control, losing self-esteem and femininity, and worries about your daughters' risk of breast cancer.

Fortunately there are resources available to help you to deal with all of the emotions and treatments that are associated with breast cancer. By going to Breastcancer.org, you'll find answers and suggestions that may help resolve some uncertainties. You can also join one of the Discussion Boards or chat rooms (links to which have been provided) to get the personal attention and support that you may need at any time of the day or night.

Knowledge of and being prepared for what lays ahead of you will provide some comfort some suggestions for learning how to deal with the hardships and uncertainty of breast cancer. Do your homework and learn the facts about breast cancer to resolve confusion and ease fears. If you have not yet been diagnosed with breast cancer but fear that you have all of the symptoms and are simply waiting to receive test results, you may want to talk to someone you love about the scenarios that are possible and how you can cope with both a best case and worst case scenario. If your fear is more centered on the treatment of breast cancer and the fear of discomfort or of losing one or both breasts, it is a good idea to talk to cancer survivors or to read their stories. For some women fighting breast cancer is no new thing and the issues that they have to deal with are related to coping with the possibility that the cancer may reoccur.

The bottom line is that there are many different ways to cope with breast cancer because there are many different reactions and ranges of emotion that people feel. What you need to do to deal with the breast cancer issues that you are having is to be proactive about getting help and reaching out to those who are able to provide you with support. Breast cancer is not something that you should feel like you have to fight all by yourself. Remember that you are not alone when dealing with breast cancer and resources are readily available to help you through this trying time.
