There are some great exercises and techniques that can help strengthen your back and cut back on the pains you are experiencing. Here is a list of several exercises to help strengthen your back.
It's important in considering back pain to determine where the pain is as different exercises help strengthen different parts of the back. Your back can basically be divided in two different parts; the upper back and the lower back. Understand which is causing you pain will better help you determine which exercises to do.
How to strength your upper back?
Lateral Pull downs
If you have access to a gym or already have a gym membership then you might already know what I'm talking about. Lateral or "lat" pull downs are a simple exercise that can help to strengthen the area right in between your shoulder blades. Of course they will also work other muscles too, but you can really target the upper back area with these. Sit on the bench and use a low weight at first. Place one hand on each side of the bar above you and pull gently behind your head all the way to your shoulders. Repeat this about 10 to 12 times.

Rowing
Now don't think that you have to have access to a boat to do this; in fact you don't even have to leave your house to use this exercise. If you have some bungee cord you can strap it to the bottom of your fit (in a sitting position) and lean forward and back in a rowing motion. It's important not to hunch your back at all when you're doing this as that will place more strain on the lower back instead of strengthening the upper back. You can also do this exercise in the gym if they have a rowing machine.
Dumbbell exercises
You can perform many different dumbbell exercises to help strengthen your upper back; front and side arm raises will help strengthen the muscles in your upper back as well as tone up your arms.
How to strengthen your lower back?
This is where a majority of people with back problems will suffer from. The lower back tends to take the brunt of everything; poor posture, bending with your waist and not your legs, and lifting everything. It's no wonder you have a bad back. Here are some exercises to help strengthen it.
Back Raises
These are usually done on an elevated object. You will lie on your stomach and have someone else sit on your legs. Going up and down, back raises helps to really strengthen the core of your lower back.
Sit ups or crunches
One of the best ways to strengthen your back is to strengthen your stomach. The stronger your stomach is the more weight your back will be able to take. Doing sit ups and crunches are probably two of the easiest things to do for your stomach. They don't require any special equipment and can be done quickly and easily.
Exercises for strengthening your back are usually easier than you would think. Most of them can be done within the comforts of your own home and are easy to learn and do. Hopefully these few will get you started back down the road of healthy living.
