Nice strong fingernails. Some women have them and some women don't. You may be one of those women with the weaker nails but want to get them stronger or you might be one of the women with nails that are already strong and want to keep them strong. There are things you can do to get or keep those strong fingernails.

One thing that you can do to do in order to get strong fingernails is some basic nail care techniques. If you get regular manicures you will want to make sure that the cuticles don't get cut because that will actually harm your fingernail. Find a good manicurist that uses good sterilization for the manicuring tools, you may need to pay more but it is worth your health. Keeping your nails well manicured and trimmed can actually make them a little bit stronger. Nails need some TLC too. Here are some other ideas for basic nail care that can help you get stronger nails:

  • When you do get a manicure or give yourself a manicure you will want to keep your fingernails short with a square shape that is slightly rounded at the top.

  • You can soak your nails for 15 minutes in bath oil and then trim any brittle nails you have. When the brittle nails are all trimmed you will then need to apply moisturizer to your nails to keep them healthier.

  • To help strengthen your fingernails you will also want to moisturize your nails and cuticles at night with any cream or lotion and then cover with cotton gloves.

  • Applying a nail hardener can also help you get stronger fingernails. There are many different kinds to choose from in any health and beauty aisle at any store. Try one brand or type for about 2-4 weeks and if you don't see any difference then try the next product for the same amount of time.

  • Don't use nail polish remover more than twice a month. If your fingernails are polished you should just touch up the color instead of removing the old color and reapplying. When you do use a nail polish remover you should use one without acetone so your fingernails don't get dried out and then use a moisturizer right afterwards.

  • Do not cut any splits or tears with your fingernails. Instead you will want to repair the splits or tears with nail glue or a clear polish. Pulling off bad parts of your fingernails can cause more problems with the nail and the cuticle around it.

  • Do not use your nails as tools. This weakens the nail and sometimes the cuticle too making it even harder to get stronger nails.

You can get stronger fingernails by eating certain foods. Not everyone agrees with this method but many people say it has worked for them. If you are having a hard time with achieving the strong nails then trying the new foods may be a good idea. Here are some foods you may want to try when your goal is getting strong fingernails:

  • Cucumbers, brown rice, root vegetables, nuts and eggs are great strengtheners for fingernails that need a little more protein to stop splitting or flaking.

  • Crab, herring and black-eyed peas are great for fingernails that need some extra zinc to prevent white spots.

  • Red meat, eggs and cherries can be eaten to produce more iron and prevent your fingernails from having ridges.

Getting strong fingernails is done through trial and error at first. Keep trying out different foods and different types of hardeners until you find the one that gives you the beautiful and strong nails you have been craving.
