Many people will give you mixed reviews when it comes to the worth of owning a gym membership. There are certainly a number of different opinions regarding the pros and cons of gym membership. Listed below are just such examples of why people choose to get a gym membership and why others decide not to.
Gym membership pros:
|
|
- Many people are attracted to gyms because gyms offer an opportunity to take part in a variety of different athletic activities. In addition to the many different machines the gym has available, there are often swimming pools, racquetball courts, basketball courts, and tennis courts available.
- Gyms offer a wide array of classes and instructors. There are different class levels and types such as Pilates, Yoga, kick boxing, etc. Many of these classes are included in your regular gym membership. You could technically fill your day with different gym activities.
- Many major spas even have luxury services, like massages, tanning, saunas and spas.
- If you're new to working out, gyms offer the attractive option of working with a personal trainer. By joining a gym you have the opportunity to work with a trainer to create a personalized workout and even get help with a nutritional plan.
- Gym employees can make sure that you are using correct form when exercising. This is valuable so that you can both avoid injuries and get a more efficient workout.
- Finally, gyms can offer support and motivation. When you go to a gym, you are surrounded by other people who are concerned about physical fitness, and their enthusiasm could rub off on you. You might even make some friends.
Gym membership cons:
- Unless you have a gym that is relatively easy to get to and opened during the hours that you have time to work out, a membership is not going to do you any good.
- Many people use the gym as a place to make social connections rather than to get a good work out. You may find it difficult to look past the constant flirting that gyms like this will have. In addition, gyms can be intimidating. Many people who are uncomfortable with their weight or appearance dislike going to gyms because they feel that they are being judged.
- Gyms are often a breading ground for germs. With so many sweaty people constantly sitting on or handling machines, there can be a lot of really nasty things growing at the gym. You will have to take precautions like to wipe down the machines that you use and to wear sandals in the showers to avoid getting athlete's foot.
- Gym contracts can really get you into trouble if you are not willing to fulfill the commitments therein. Instead of committing yourself to a full year or several years when you first join a gym, consider doing a month to month membership to make sure that you are actually going to go. Signing a year contract will not only cost more, but if you want to pull out of the contract you may have to pay a fine.
- Gyms can be expensive. A month to month fee can be anything from $25 to $100. Members usually also have to pay a sign up fee, which can be a couple of hundred dollars.
- Gyms can become very crowded, especially during weekday evenings. It is not rare to see a gym that is so crowded that you have to wait in line to use a machine and classes may fill up before you can get into them.
