How good of a work out is yoga really?

Although yoga is a very popular form of exercise and meditation, a lot of people still are skeptical. Is yoga really a good form of exercise? Madonna and Sting are both celebrities that both do yoga workouts, but that still leaves people wondering how good of a work out yoga really is. The truth is that yoga can be a good work out, but is also might not be enough. Getting a good work out from yoga partially depends on what type of yoga you do.
For example, if you are a person who works in an office and doesn't get a lot of exercise, then you should not rely on most yoga forms for your only form of exercise. Many forms of yoga involve meditation, chanting, and gentle stretching, which really isn't going to cut it for a good work out. Instead, if you are looking for a good yoga work out, then your best option is to get involved with power yoga.

Power yoga is a type of yoga which is a blend of Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga. However, power yoga has been developed relatively recently, and it is targeted towards a Western audience. Power yoga is made to be more rigorous and intense than other types of yoga work outs, so that it can be incorporated into the American, Western lifestyle. In fact, power yoga is so physically demanding, that it is recommended that you only start power yoga if you are in relatively good physical condition. If you are interested in staying physically fit through yoga, then power yoga is really the only way to go for a work out. Make sure though, that you find a good power yoga class that challenges you and gets your heart rate going.
However, if you are looking for a mental workout, then other forms of yoga might be something that you want to consider. Pattabhi Jois, who helped to develop and perfect Ashtanga style of yoga has said that yoga is "mind medicine." He finds that yoga is great to help people balance their mental, physical, and spiritual aspects. This "mental work out" can be attained by doing different breathing exercises and body postures. In addition, meditation is also an essential part of yoga, which can also help to cleanse and purify the mind. In addition, other yoga advocates have also said that yoga is a great holistic practice which helps the body in mentally, spiritually, and physically.
Overall, though, most health experts say that there needs to be more aerobic exercise in a person's life to stay healthy. Cardiovascular health will not be maintained merely by doing slow yoga stretches. Instead, people need to be involved in running, walking, swimming, or some other activity which picks up their heart rate. These aerobic and cardiovascular activities should be performed for 20 to 30 minutes per session, for three times a week. When this is done, then people are able to lose weight and maintain good heart health. The only form of yoga which can pick up the heart rate at all is power yoga, and the effectiveness of the power yoga really depends on the class and how intensive it is.
So, does this mean that you shouldn't do yoga styles besides power yoga? Absolutely not! Yoga is still a good way to move your body around and get exercise. However, if you are looking for a good cardiovascular work out, and your power yoga class is not intensive enough, then you should probably go for a jog too! Just make sure that you get your heart rate going with some form of exercise, and then you'll be able to supplement the aerobic exercise with yoga.
