How to avoid varicose veins

Just about every woman that has given birth to a child knows what varicose veins are and would love to get rid of them. And if you haven't had kids and are still young and vibrant you're probably searching for some way on how to avoid varicose veins. Let's talk a little more about what they are, and how to avoid getting them.
What are varicose veins and what causes them?
Varicose veins are defined as swollen, distended veins, generally occurring in the legs. They are most commonly found on women rather than men and are generally not a serious sign of any type of medical problems. Varicose veins become more prevalent with age and have been reported to affect anywhere between 30% to 60% of the American population.

Varicose veins occur when health vein walls become weak and swell. This causes the blood to back up and sit, or pool inside the vein. They can be related to an increase in pressure in your leg veins or defective valves. Although the exact cause is unknown there are several different things that contribute to varicose veins, a few of which are:
- Heredity
- Aging
- Obesity or being overweight
- Hormone changes during pregnancy
- Sitting with your legs crossed
- History of blood clots
- The use of birth control pills
There are other factors that can contribute to varicose veins as well; this is just a small list of some of the more commonly heard of things.
How to avoid varicose veins
So now that you have a better idea of how you can get varicose veins, let's talk a little bit about how to avoid them. Here are some good suggestions on how to avoid getting varicose veins:
- Look at your family history. Since we know that some people will get varicose veins because it is hereditary, it's always a good idea to do some checking with the family history. See if varicose veins runs in the family; if it does don't freak out, there still may be hope for you. Knowing is half the battle, and if you know that you will most likely be a candidate for them, you can at least keep yourself healthy enough to reduce and maybe even avoid getting them.
- Regular Exercise. Regular and consistent exercise will definitely keep your legs from swelling up and most likely keep you from getting blood clots in them as well. Walking, running, playing tennis, or some type of physically activity that encourages circulation in the blood will help you avoid getting varicose veins.
- Watch your weight. As we have already seen, obesity can play a big role in causing varicose veins so naturally you should watch what you eat and your weight. Keep your weight down will keep the pressure off of your veins, as well as a diet low in salt, and high in fiber. Drink a lot of water to keep hydrated and keep a close eye on what goes into your mouth.
- Avoid long periods of sitting. Even if you have an office job where you're stuck at the computer all day long, you can still adjust your position enough so that you're not stuck in one place all day long. Take frequent water and bathroom breaks to keep the circulation moving. If you can, try to elevate your legs on something underneath the desk. And try to avoid sitting with your legs crossed.
- Choose your wardrobe carefully. Wearing low heels keeps your calf and other leg muscles working more; don't wear restrictive clothing around your weight or groin areas; and don't wear tight girdles to work every day.
So there you have it, some easy ways on how to avoid varicose veins. Staying healthy and active is the best thing you can do for your body regardless of the varicose veins, however staying physically fit will definitely give you a head start on avoiding them all together.
