How to better enjoy the use of your treadmill

Treadmill workouts are some of the most popular pieces of exercise equipment around, and for good reason. They offer a convenient way to work out and feature options that can tailor to every age and fitness level. Running and walking enthusiasts can turn to the treadmill when weather or other issues keep them from going outside without compromising or skipping a work out.
However, treadmills often have the reputation of being boring, with no change of scenery; some people feel like they are "going nowhere." If you use a treadmill and have thought this from time to time, the following tips will help you to better enjoy the use of your treadmill, so it doesn't turn into an expensive coat rack.

- Save reading books or magazines for when you are on the treadmill. Many people would love to read more, but have a difficult time finding the time to do so. If you have particular magazines or books you'd like to read, tell yourself you can't read them unless you are on the treadmill (make sure you're walking in stead of running!) This way, you'll be more likely to look forward to your workout, and you will pass the time and maybe even exercise longer.
- Don't do the same routine over and over. You will better enjoy the use of your treadmill if you vary routine every now and again. Anyone will get bored doing the same thing over and over. Vary your routine by walking one day, then jogging the next. Or alternate walking uphill and running on an even surface. Do sprints, or carry light hand weights while you are on the treadmill. Knowing you will be doing something different each workout will help you to better enjoy the use of your treadmill.
- Watch TV or listen to music. Hopping on the treadmill and working out will be easier and more enjoyable to you if you do it to music or while watching your favorite television program. Consider purchasing an iPod or other music player that allows you to download and listen to music and listen while you exercise on the treadmill. The upbeat tempo of the music will give you energy for your workout. Or, if you prefer to keep your mind off of the treadmill altogether, watch some TV or listen to books on tape while you are on the treadmill.
- Get to know your treadmill. Many treadmills have a variety of different programs that can make your entire work out more enjoyable. Learn what each of these programs mean and try them out. Some treadmills have options for Fat Burning, Uphill, 5K training, and other routines that will make using your treadmill more enjoyable while providing you a number of fitness benefits as well.
- Keep it maintained. You will better enjoy the use of your treadmill and be less likely to skip a work out if you make sure your treadmill is in good working order. No one wants to get on a treadmill that has a belt that skips or squeaks. Keep it well-maintained and in good repair.
The treadmill is a great way to work out, but it can get a little boring if you do the same thing over and over. The above tips will help you to better enjoy the use of your treadmill.
