How to cut down on the sweets, and still enjoy food

Almost everybody loves to eat. It's just something that we like to do. It can make us happy when we feel sad, can soothe a troubled heart and add festivity to a party. Unfortunately, it can also have some negative effects. Eating can makes us gain weight, clog our arteries and cause diabetes. There is a way to get around this, however. You simply need to eat healthy and exercise. It's not really that complicated. But one thing that can be a bit more difficult is cutting down on sweets and still being able to enjoy food. Luckily, there are ways to accomplish such a feat. Here are five tips on how to cut down on sweets and still enjoy your food.

- Do not add sugar to foods. This is the easiest and most basic way to immediately reduce the amount of sugar you're eating. Major culprits of this sin include cereal, coffee and tea. If you simply can't handle eating cereal or drinking your coffee without sugar, try reducing the amount of sugar you put in each serving.
- Don't be fooled by claims of "healthy sugar." As far as your body is concerned, sugar is sugar. Brown sugar, raw sugar- it's all pretty much the same thing once it's inside your belly. There is an alternative, however. Try using Splenda as an alternative to sugar. It is similar in taste and texture, but is not nearly as bad for you.
- Shop for color. The more your grocery basket looks like an abundance of color, the better it is for you. It usually implies that you're getting more fresh vegetables and fruit rather than stacking up on packaged cookies or cakes.
- Be cautious with carbohydrates. Carbs are an essential part of our diet. We need them to survive. The trick is knowing which carbs are good for you and which are not. The best ones are complex carbs and include whole grains. The worst ones are simple carbs and may include the sugar found in junk food. Learn the differences between types of carbs and try to choose the healthiest ones. This way you can enjoy your sugar fix without harming your body.
- Revolutionize dessert. If you're like most people, dessert may be the highlight of your meal. It can also be the most calorie-packed and full of sugar. So for once, instead of that New York style cheesecake, try a bowl of fresh strawberries with chocolate drizzled on top. Both have the ability to make your mouth water, but only the strawberries can help your body become healthier.
If, at this point, you're panicking, stop, take a deep breath and keep reading. This doesn't mean you should NEVER eat any sugar. You should be able to enjoy your food without making life-changing alterations to your diet. But you should be careful. Take each of these tips one at a time. Don't try to cut all sugar out of your diet all at once. That would be foolish and unpleasant. Just remember to use moderation in all things. Instead of using 3 teaspoons of sugar in your tea each night, try using just 1. Instead of having 1 large slice of chocolate pound cake, try going to just a half of a slice. And don't worry if, once in a while, you splurge and eat something packed with sugar. It isn't going to kill you (unless you have a medical condition like diabetes wherein sugar can seriously harm your body). Remember that eating healthy can be fun and tasty. You just have to have a good attitude about it.
