Pedicures are fun to have done when you have the time and the patience. For a really good spa pedicure you can be in the chair for hours and it isn't so easy on the checkbook. Not everyone has that time or sometimes the extra money to pamper yourself the way you may want or even need to. You can have a great spa like pedicure right in your own living room while watching a favorite TV program, browse the internet or catch up on some reading. In fact a spa like pedicure at home could actually become more relaxing then making an appointment, keeping that appointment and then having some stranger poke at your toes and feet. Here are some tips on how to do a great home pedicure.

There are a few basic tools you should have at your disposal when doing a pedicure at home. These tools will be the same as the ones the spa uses but may not always have the fancy bottles or fancy brand names. If you don't have all of these tools you can do without and start adding the items a little at a time.

Here is the list of the basic tools you should have when doing a great home pedicure:

  • Nail polish remover

  • Cotton balls

  • Toenail clippers and/or nail scissors

  • Nail file

  • Nail brush

  • Orange stick

  • Cuticle oil

  • Foot file

  • Water basin

  • Foot scrub

  • Foot lotion

  • Nail polish base coat

  • Clear nail polish

  • Colored nail polish
  • Once you have these basic tools you are ready to begin your great home pedicure. Here are some of the steps in getting that just like a spa pedicure in the comfort of your own home.

    1. Remove any of your old nail polish from your toes using the cotton balls and the nail polish remover.
    2. Once the nails are cleared of the old nail polish then you can start to trim the nails with a toenail clipper. The best shape for toe nails is straight across. Cutting the toenail straight across will decrease the chances of ingrown nails or any hangnails on your feet. Smooth out rough edges with a nail file.
    3. Next, clean your toe nails with the nail brush and soak feet for ten to fifteen minutes in the water basin. Add a couple tablespoons of Epsom salt to the water for some added relaxation. The Epsom salts will feel great and also help to soften the cuticles and any calluses on the bottom of the feet.
    4. Apply a foot scrub to your feet and keep on for ten minutes. Rinse the foot mask off with water and then use a foot file to thoroughly exfoliate calluses or any other rough spots from the bottom of your feet.
    5. Take a cotton ball and wrap a little bit of it around the edge of the orange stick. Apply cuticle oil and gently push the cuticles on your toes back with the orange stick.
    6. When you are finished with the cuticles you will want to apply a base coat to your toenails. The use of a base coat is even more important if you are using a dark nail polish because it will prevent any staining on your toe nail itself.
    7. Apply two coats of your favorite nail polish color. Bright and fun colors are great for the toes, try hot pinks, bright reds and even bright oranges.
    8. When the color has dried you will want to apply a top coat or clear nail polish to prevent any chipping and it helps the nail polish last a lot longer.
    9. When the toe nails have dried completely apply a foot lotion to help deter any of the rough patches from reappearing. Wear a pair of socks or spa booties to keep the moisture from the foot lotion on your foot and to get the ultimate benefits from a great home pedicure.
