How to get started doing aerobics

Are you out of shape? Do you want to start exercising, but you're not quite sure what type of exercise you should do? One of the best forms of exercise (which actually is a required form of exercise for good health) is aerobic exercise. There are a lot of different forms of aerobic exercise, and really any type of work out that gets your heart pumping can be considered aerobic. However, aerobics today commonly refer to aerobic dances. If you are interested in getting started doing aerobics, here are a couple of things to help you out:

  • Figure out what type of aerobics work best for you: Before starting an aerobic class or any type of aerobic form, you should make sure that it is the right type of exercise for you. The three most common forms of aerobics are water aerobics, step aerobics, and dance aerobics (also called jazz aerobics). You should research these different forms of aerobics to see what best fits your physical needs and interests. For example, water aerobics are great for people who have joint, bone, or muscle problems. Step aerobics are perfect for people who want to work on their thigh or glut muscles. Dance aerobics are fun for people who like to move around. Look into these different classes and see what works best for you.
  • Where would you like to work out? There are a lot of different places where you can do aerobic exercises. As you are getting started doing aerobics, you should consider your schedule and figure out what would be best for you. Many people prefer going to an aerobic class at a local gym in the evenings, after they get off of work. Other people find it more convenient (and less embarrassing!) to do aerobic exercises at home, along with a TV show or an aerobic exercise video. Other people prefer to do water aerobics at a local pool or in their own pool. Consider what would fit best in your schedule, so that you can dedicate the time to do aerobic activity on a constant basis.
  • Purchase the necessary equipment (if required): If you decide to go aerobic activities at your own home, you might need to buy some equipment, such as a step board. Or, some aerobic classes require you to purchase a dance mat (or stretch mat) for your work out. In addition, some high impact aerobic classes require you to purchase weights to carry or wear while you exercise. Speak with your aerobic instructor to see if there are things you need to purchase before the class begins.
  • Start slowly: It is a good idea when starting aerobics to begin at a low impact or beginner level. This way, you can get used to the coordination required for the different movements easily. In addition, you will not risk straining your muscles or hurting yourself right off of the bat. However, if you have a lot of experience dancing and are already in good shape before starting aerobics, you may feel comfortable to begin your aerobics classes at an intermediate or even an advanced (high impact) level.

Starting a new form of exercise can sometimes be intimidating and difficult, but give your aerobic exercise a chance for a good couple of weeks! This will give you time to get used to the routines and also give your body time to adapt. After you get started with aerobics, you might never want to do any other type of exercise - many people wouldn't change this form of exercise for anything! Have fun and get a good work out with your aerobic activity!
