How to keep your hair roots and ends healthy

Most women want the hair that looks like you've just stepped out of a salon every day right? And finding the products to make it look like that can be expensive and damaging to your roots and ends. However, if you're like most, that salon swept hair doesn't happen every day and it takes real time and effort in learning how to keep your hair roots and ends healthy. The good news is that there are some hidden secrets to keeping your hair healthy and strong that won't break your budget or make you late for work every day.
Regular haircuts
In order to keep the ends of your hair healthy, strong, and in tact you must make appointments for regular haircuts. You should plan on at least 30-45 minutes to get a cut and style and don't ever plan on going home and re-creating what the stylist has done. It just never works out that way. Get a natural cut that fits the shape of your face so that even on the days you don't have a ton of time to do it, it will still work for you. Make sure your stylist understands the four basic aspects of a good haircut; density, texture, type, and face shape. In order to keep your ends healthy you should be getting a haircut about every 6 weeks.

Shampooing and Conditioning
There are several do's and don'ts to shampooing and conditioning your hair:
- Avoid excessive shampooing. Washing your hair once a day will do the job; use a mild non-alkaline shampoo. Shampooing will always strip your skin of the natural oils that help to keep it moist so avoid anything too harsh; stick to organic ingredients if possible. Deodorants especially are hard on your skin and scalp.
- Before you wash your hair make sure you comb out all the knots. You can avoid breaking the hair strands if you do it before hand.
- Before you apply the shampoo rinse your hair with warm water and make sure it is thoroughly wet. When you apply the shampoo and conditioner, don't use your fingernails to scrape your hair, it's bad for your roots. Instead, to encourage healthy root growth use the palm of your fingertips and massage your scalp in circular motions.
- Make sure you rinse all the shampoo out. Leftover shampoo or conditioner in your hair will damage the roots and your scalp.
Wet hair
It's always a good idea to make sure your hair is dry before you go to bed. Most people don't know it, but sleeping on wet or even half wet hair can damage and easily break the hair strands. As you sleep and move your head the hair strands rub against each other. It can be very damaging so remember to dry it with a blow dryer or let it dry on its own.
Styling and Treatments
Over drying, as well as excessive heat from curling or straight irons can also cause damage to the roots and the ends of your hair. If you blow dry your hair often, make sure you start at the roots and work your way down. Try to use a high quality curling or flat iron as this will be better for your hair. When you apply hair treatment products make sure you do it when you're hair is wet.
Hopefully these suggestions on how to keep your hair roots and ends healthy have been helpful. If you want great hair, then take care of it.
