What a waste of money it is to go to all the trouble of dying your hair just to have it fade away after a few washes. Or what might be worse; having it grow out and show the roots just after a few weeks. Here are some tips on to make your hair dye last longer.

Tip #1: Stick to your shade
The best way to not have your hair dye color look so obvious when growing out is to stick to the closest shades of your hair color. If you can keep it close to your natural hair color so that as it grows out it's not as noticeable at the roots and you won't have to dye it as often. Saves you time on dying, and money spent to dye your hair.

Tip #2: Choose a good dye
You have probably heard that not all hair dyes are the same. Well, that is very true. In fact many of the store brand hair dyes you can by at places like Wal Mart or Target are actually really bad for you hair. If you have to buy it from a store make sure it's a well known brand and one that a hair stylist would recommend. Dying is hard on your hair anyway so you want to make sure you choose a good quality dye. Or better yet, if you can afford it go to a salon and have it professionally done, or buy your product from a professional hair salon store.

Tip #3: Touch it up

Instead of dying your hair every one or two weeks you can purchase touch up kits to make your hair color last longer. Root touch up kits can keep your hair the same color without actually having to dye it so often. They are fairly inexpensive and less harsh on your hair. This can help stretch out the time between colorings.

Tip #4: Wash your hair with cold water

You may have noticed that after you have your hair colored at the salon they will generally rinse it with cold water. Cold water closes the hair follicles and helps the color stay in longer. Just like hot water is great for removing stains, cold water keeps them in. The colder the water, the longer the hair color will stay in.

Tip #5: Find the right shampoo and conditioner

Believe it or not there are certain shampoos and conditioners that help keep color in your hair longer than others. Try finding color boosting shampoos and conditioners and use them in your hair every day until you reach the color you want. Color safe shampoo and conditioners will help keep the color in longer.

Tip #6: Stay out of the sun
Frequent sun exposure is another reason why hair color fades quickly. You can either buy a hat, or there is a product out called hair sunscreen which protects your hair color form fading from too much sun exposure. Either of these ideas works well and can help keep the color in longer during the hot summer months.

Tip #7: Stay out of the chlorine
If it's summer and you've just dyed your hair you're going to want to stay out of the pool, or at least keep your hair out of the pool. Chlorine is a bleach and it will ruin your color if it comes in contact with dyed hair. If there's no way around getting your hair wet you can try adding a deep conditioner before hand, and then rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar or club soda after to get all the bleach out.

Don't shy away from dying your hair just because you're afraid the color will fade too quickly, or it will cost too much to maintain. Hopefully these helpful tips on how to make your hair dye last longer will keep you from making too many trips to the salon.
